rough idle at cold start up.

Temps have dropped down to the 30s-40s in the mornings and evenings. When I first start up my 96xj when it's cold it will idle a little rough until it warms up, or I drive it around a bit. Got any thoughts? Both O2 sensors have been replaced less than 8,000 miles ago.

    Spark plugs are white

I posted a week or so ago about a problem with overheating and a rough running 4.0L in my 96xj. Yesterday I pulled three spark plugs to take a look. They all appeared to be very white in color. They are regular champions from Napa. I have since diagnosed my overheating problem (bad aux fan...

Rough idle from sitting for prolonged time.

To make a long story short, I have a bad Auxilary fan relay. I pulled a trailer (twice) yesterday in the 90 degree temps and left my xj idling. With the bad relay my electric fan didn't kick on so it got pretty hot...between 210 and the red...past normal operating temp. I discovered this...

    Bad coolant temp sensor???

I pulled two pontoons out of the water for the season. I had to use 4low for the steep grade. I left it idling while hooking up and unhooking. I noticed it ran rough from the tailpipe, so I hopped in and blipped the throttle. It bogged down and then came back up and idled really rough...

Lowspeed loss of power and then backfires.

Problem: 96xj with 176k on the ticker. 4.0L. Lately this problem has been occurring more and more often...it seems to happen after I've driven for about 5 miles, and then let it sit for 5-30 minutes. I'll get back in, start it, drive off and if it gets to about 1500-2000rpm in 1st gear it'll...

Ubolts from Rusty's, how much longer?

I need to order some new pinion shims. I'm upgrading to steel since the crappy aluminum ones have pretty much disintegrated over the years. I was going to order the ones from Rusty's. Does anyone know if they come with 5/16" center pins? Also, I need new Ubolts. Can anyone tell me how much...

    What causes tire scrubbing/scallop effect?

I changed the rear axle bearings on my 8.25" rear and decided to rotate the tires while I was at it. I noticed that the rear tires were scalloped. I could feel it while rubbing my hand over the center tread while the tire was rolling down the driveway. The lugs on both sides of the tires are...

Axle bearing noise while rotating by hand normal?

I hope this question doesn't come off as being too stupid: I replaced the rear brakes a couple days ago and while I had the drums off I rotated the axle by hand (it's 8.25 rear end). The outer bearings are roller bearings and I could almost feel each roller as I turned the axle by hand. Is...

Do I need new axle shafts if bearings are bad?

I have an unbearable howl that increases with and decreases without load. Turns seem to be unaffected. I believe it may be the rear axle bearings. I replaced the seals a few years ago as they were leaking. When I pulled the axles they looked a little bit worn. A little bit of pitting, but...

    Tire won't hold balance!!!

Here's the deal: About a year ago I bought a set of wrangler canyon wheels, 15x8. On them are mounted a set of 31" Cooper STs. Turns out one of the wheels was bent and caused a little bit of a wobble around 55mph. Just recently I purchased a new used canyon that is true. I swapped out the...

    Please help, Code 72

I keep getting code 72 - catalytic converter circuitry. It's a 96xj, 159,000 miles, 4.0l. A couple weeks ago, after the cel had been on for a while, I pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled the O2 ground connections on the block, under spark plug #5. It didn't clear the problem...the light came...

    Self diagnostics, or get scanner?

I have a 96 Cherokee and have been getting a code 72, using the 3 times on/off ignition trick and reading the CEL flashes. Code 72 in the haynes says CAtalytic converter circuitry...bring to dealer (more or less). Will hooking it up to a fancy code reader/scanner like the ones at autozone give...

OBD II code #72 Catalytic Converter Circuitry

My 96xj threw a code #72 Catalytic Converter Circuitry. Has anyone else ever had one of these codes thrown, and what was the problem? The Haynes manual says to take it to the dealer...no thanks! I have 151,000 miles on the xj, and replaced the cat with a high flow probably about 30-50k miles...

    How to test O2 sensor?

I've done a search and have had difficulty finding a thread that lays out how to test the O2 sensor on a 96xj. What are the mesaurements for the fore and aft O2 sensors, in relation to the catalytica convereter. I replaced my fore O2 sensor quite some time ago when I did my header...probably...

Is it necessary to replace spark plug wires at certain intervals?

Is it really necessary to replace the sparkplug wires every 60,000 miles? Can't you just check em' with an ohm meter and if it reads 0, they're still good? Do brand new plug wires read 0 ohms?

Spring retainer clip is causing rattle when spring compresses.

After all this time I have finally discovered what is causing the 'loose' rattle feeling whenever I hit potholes or any other rough surfaces. Just last night I noticed that when I pound on the front driver's side spring with my fist I can reproduce the rattle that I normally feel/hear. I have...

Will TJ wheels fit an xj?

Are the wheels off a 2001 TJ and XJ interchangeable? They don't have a different bolt pattern do they?

Will new gears improve gas mileage?

I searched and didn't find much in the way of specifics... Here's the skinny. I have a 96xj with 3" lift and 31's. I currently have a D30 and Chry. 8.25. 3.55 gears. I want to improve my gas mileage and was wondering if throwing 4.10s in would do so. What do you think could be a reasonable...

Staying at 3" lift, JKS trackbar or Kevin's offroad?

I need a new trackbar. The TRE on the oem one is shot. I figured since I've been at 3" now for over three years I might as well upgrade to an adjustable one so that I can center my axle. My concern...I live in Michigan and the only wheeling availiable is sand, mud, and snow. Is the JKS unit...

    Borla Header/driveshaft clearance issue

I have a Rusty's 3" lift on my XJ and have kept the stock tracbar in the stock location for roughly two years. I have lived with the bumpsteer and would like to remedy the situation by either redrilling the mount, or getting an adjustable tracbar. My problem is that the driveshaft will have...
