I have the BFG Mud terrains and they are terrible in SNOW SNOW.
But they are GREAT off road. That is why they are MUD tires. NOT snow tires.
In the winters here in Cleveland I run a wintermark SNOW TIRE with SIPES for ICE and a SUPER SOFT rubber compound. They out perform the BFG muds by FAR...

whats does FUTZING around mean? did you cut any wires? did you unplug the flat ignition cable? Look on the left side of the column to see if wires are in the way of anything. The moving parts and spring are on the opposite side of the ignition key hole inside the column.
If there is a Light in the switch then the 4th wire is posibbly the dimmer switch wire. It turns on the little light inside the switch...maybe that is what you are seeing?

I would suggest getting some butt connectors and Reconnecting the wires according to color.
ex. Connect the BLUE wire with white tracer to the BLUE wire with white tracer and so on.
Obviously if you CUT wires they are NOT supposed to be CUT...so the best thing to do is reattach them. Then...
Well if I'm not mistaken in 88 the Cherokee doesn't have a PCV valve however it uses a breather tube system. Your Piston rings are getting worn from age and allowing engine compression to pass by them and into the Crankcase. This is Known as previously stated "BLOW BY"
