A/C fan only blows in defrost mode

A friend has an 88 XJ in which the A/C fan only directs air in the defrost mode. Moving the slider to Max, Norm, Bi-Level, Vent & Defrost makes no difference, all the air enters at the base of the windshield. We replaced the control unit with another that is known to work...no difference. My...

    Total wiring harness replacement

I have a perfect '90 Comanche (short bed) that's just coming back from paint. Everything (wiring harness, drivetrain, interior, glass, etc.) was removed for the job so it could be done correctly. I have obtained a very low mile drivetrain (4.0, AW4, 242) from a '99 XJ that I will be installing...

Tire sizing and offset for 16" wheels

After years of running 15" wheels, I'm going to give 16's a try. First, I'm looking for a tire size that will get me around 31" tall, but slightly favoring the narrow side for width. Since I've not bought anything, the wheel width can be anything. That determined, what kind of offset will work...

Bedliner material to protect lower body panels

I've seen this discussed here before, but can't find the thread for the life of me. I'm considering spraying the lower body panels of my MJ with one of the bedliner materials when the truck goes in for paint this month. Could someone please advise me if this is a good idea? If you've done it...

Renix fuel pump ballast resistor voltage

My '88 XJ just up and quit on me this afternoon. The first thing I looked for was fuel pressure, which there was none. I next bypassed the ballast, but still no luck. With the key in the run position I'm only seeing 0.3 volts to the resistor, so I'm now smelling a rat. What is the next logical...

    Punta Gorda damage from Charley

The damage in the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area is far worse than what's being reported on TV. You should do everything in your power to find a way to spend a day down there helping those who really need assistance badly. I can't tell you just how sad it is to see someone's grandparents...

    VSS woes continue

Our 98 showed a "check engine light" code that indicated the problem was the vehicle speed sensor. I replaced the VSS, disconnected the battery and turned the key to 'start' for 30 seconds, reconnected the battery and drove off. Sure enough, the engine light came back on. The speedo and tranny...

    VSS - OEM or aftermarket

What is the best source for a new VSS (vehicle speed sensor), factory or aftermarket? This is about the only Jeep part I've never replaced before. Thanks!

    Vehicle Speed Sensor lock

This is going to sound really lame, but what's the trick for removing the electrical plug from the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)? It has one of those sliding red locks that holds the plug in place, and I'd really rather not break it if possible. The Jeep's a 99, BTW. Any words of wisdom?

    Insulating the transmission tunnel

I would like to insulate the transmission tunnel of my MJ while the drivetrain is out. The factory undercoating is rather thin (at best), so I was seriously considering using a product such as Herculiner to coat the tunnel. Any first hand experience that can be shared? Thanks!

    Comanche exhaust system

Is there a well designed "cat back" exhaust system out there for a shortbed MJ? Lots of XJ parts, but I'm not finding a decent tailpipe for the Comanche. The front of the system is Borla, BTW. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Powertrain removal

Is it possible to remove the complete powertrain (engine, tranny, transfer case) all at once? I've pulled engines out of these things many times, but never attempted to do the whole stack at one time. The vehicle is a rolled 1999 XJ with a 4.0, AW-4 and 242. Since the body is trashed, I don't...

    1988 electrical problems

Oh, how I love electrical problems. Here's the scoop. I went to start the Jeep today (while parked in the dealer's parking lot) and was greeted to a totally dead vehicle. No clicks or sounds of any sort, just a really dead XJ. After getting towed home (major embarrassment), I went looking for...

    Comanche brake system

I know performance brakes have been discussed here at length, but I've got a unique problem applying this to my MJ. As you may be aware, Comanches have a brake proportioning system attached to the rear differential to adjust for various bed loads. What this presents me with is a proportioning...

    1988 Renix TPS readings

I've had an intermittent problem starting my Jeep after it has run for an hour or so. It will fire, run rough then die. If you give it a few minutes, it normally restarts without issues. The CPS is new and the fuel pump tests out fine. These are the readings that I'm getting from my TPS (1988...

    1999 online FSM

Does anyone have a link to a 1999 factory service manual? I've got a wiring "Gremlin"... :banghead:
