    Strange smell in new Jeep.

I see no one answered you about white residue on window rubber. It is very common and not a problem. I think there was a TSB with advice on how to clean it. No big deal and not caused by water. I had two leaks that made my jeep smell moldy and would sometimes fog up the inside of my back...

    2 cables on AT shifter

In case you're still fooling with this, I just fixed my '89 last week. In my case, one of the two wires came loose from the electric switch down on the brake pedal. Couldn't shift from park while running at all. Every day it seemed I would have to push further down on the brake to get out of...

    Wierd Starting Problem

Since it started in neutral, the NSS is the most likely culprit. Another could be worn brushes on your starter. Next time it happens, give your starter a light whack with a wrench. If it starts afterward, you need to replace the starter brushes.

    Rear should seat belt.

Juice, I have an '89 and there were no factory installed shoulder belts for the back seat. I think the first year with them was '90. I understand there are no attach points for ours from the factory, but there may still be a retrofit available. Check these threads...

    Need help indentifying this

Just popped the hood on my '89 4.0L. Cbremer's right. It has a hose stamped "11/32 VL" from there attached to the top left side of the vacuum booster (above the brake reservoir). I know it came that way from the factory 'cause I'm the only owner. Were power brakes just an option back then...

    Drunk Mirror

Sean, that's brilliant! I've been puzzling over how to attack my floppy passenger mirror for over a year. The hairdryer method won't get it hot enough, and I don't have a heat gun - but was worried that would be too much uncontrolled heat anyway (or with my luck the mirror would fall out at...

    1988 Cherokee AIR SYSTEM PROBLEMS

The airflow controls are actuated by vacuum. If you get air out the defrost vents only at all settings then you have a lack of vacuum to the controls. Major suspects are a cracked vacuum canister (inside the front bumper, passenger side) or the lines running from it located beneath the battery...

    Draining the Radiator

I just did the same on my '89 last weekend. It's a tight fit, but you can get the valve cover back on without removing the two hoses. If you decide to remove them, the only radiator fluid you will lose will be from the pressure bottle, since it sits higher than the hoses. I decided removing...

    XJ Test Drive -- questions

Here goes: Maintenance Light is a mechanical timer suggesting O2 sensor should be changed. I think it turns on around 80K. When dealer replaced my sensor, they just unhooked the timer under the dash by the steering column. Hissing noise by battery. There's a vacuum bottle in front of the...

    Starting Troubles, CPS?

If unplugging and replugging the CPS connector didn't help at the time (not sure if that was one of the connectors you tried), I don't think you can safely say it's a bad CPS. When mine started going bad, the unplug-replug routine worked for a few months before it died completely.

About to buy a '89 Ltd.. Questions

My '89 requires a good throttle body cleaning about every six months to idle well. I don't remove the TB, but make sure everything is clean around the butterfly and remove the IAC (idle air controller) and make sure the pintle and seat are very clean. What really helped though, was replacing...

Whats the signs of a bad CPS????

I just changed the CPS on my '89 with 111k last weekend. It was the original, but hadn't failed completely. I'd been doing the occasional unplug/replug but never failed to get it running. Lately, though, the jeep was giving me long crank times and a low rough idle in addition to the...

    Typical probs

89 XJer, I now do the CCV tube cleaning with each oil change. As others have mentioned, it not only solves the oil in the airbox problem, but also slows or stops oil pushing through the rear main and other seals. Here's a great how-to article: My Jeep is Blowing Oil into My Air Filter!!

Oil on the bellhousing and tranny pan...

Before you tear into it, make sure your leak isn't from the back of your valve cover. It does a great job of mimicking a rear main leak, and it's very common on the 4.0L. If you see any oil higher up on your bellhousing, it isn't your rear main.

    heater no workie

I've had to flush the heater core every year or two to keep the warm air flowing on my '89. The inlet and outlet hoses are right beneath your coolant bottle on the firewall. I recommend Craig Houghtaling's method of hooking up two short pieces of hose and flushing it both directions with the...

Heater only works on defrost mode ?! vacuum lines?

Yes, the black ball behind the front bumper is the vacuum canister, and air only through defrost vents is due to lack of vacuum to the heater controls. I would first re-check your splicing work and if ok then look for other leaks.
