You can do it, you just have to cut into the factory harness and wire in stand alone relays down by the bulbs. Would still protect the factory switch, give you much better lighting and maintain the plug and play lighting from the snow plow.
I had a western on my 93 XJ wired in that way with...
Wish I'd seen this thread a couple of days ago. Could really have used to help diagnosing a noise in my front end. Hard to do it by myself.
Glad to see you guys had fun!
I used these too. Worked great. You can install them and forget about it. The strips from Chrysler are called "Sill reinforcement brackets" for anyone who wants to get one from the stealership.
Got my tax return and I'm tempted to run to the local Dunhams to grab a 91/30 for ~$80. I think I'm gonna stick it in the closet and plan out my approach with a LOT of research.

The harness is available for $29.99 here http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/csd/full.aspx?Page=48 part number 36-3580. It says it fits a chevy blazer but it's the same as the eautoworks harness and I'm running the LMC harness in my XJ.
The autopals you are looking at typically come with bulbs...
While you are at it, put in an aftermarket wiring harness for your headlights. It will protect the new headlight switch and allows you to run higher wattage bulbs safely.
You can make your own http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoHeadlightLoom.htm
Or you can buy one...
