show your fix for busted old-style cargo lights

Not quite related question, but any reference for the bulbs used in the early (1989) roof lights? They're not a standard size in Europe and not listed in the manual. Previous owner couldn't work out how to switch them off (turned the headlamp knob by accident), so he pulled the bulbs and lost...

    2.1l Renault Rebuild

If you read French, the Renault FSM and Revue Technique are both available, not sure what there is in English, sorry.

    1986 Turbo Diesel XJ Gearing?

French spec was 4.10 in base and commercial models, 3.73 in Limiteds. 2.5VM and 2.1 Renault are very different engines.

considering an 85 diesel 5 speed

As I found out the other week, be aware that some of the parts used in the Renault-Jeep conversion can no longer be found, at all. The engine is standard Renault, the transmission and everything else is Jeep, but the bits in between... In particular (at least in my case), the lines that run to...

considering an 85 diesel 5 speed

No idea on the price... The Renault diesel is a good engine, but with 86 bhp and 4.10 gearing, don't expect much performance wise. The turbo gives plenty of boost once it spools up, but keeping it spinning is a bit of an aquired art, you end up driving to the boost gauge more than the rev...

    Noise

Had a strange noise driving home tonight, sounded like a rotating part touching against something at speed, only happened when accelerating (in 3rd gear at the time, manual box) and only happened twice in quick succession. My first thought would be the fan touching against something, but I...

    Help from italy!

Try reversing for a few metres after switching to 2wd, that is normally enough to sort mine. Just discovered my gear ration (4.10) and the fact that my "1990" XJ was built in december 1989, useful thread.

    gas tank

I tried patching my tank (diesel) with epoxy. While it fixed the holes, for every hole I repaired, I found two more. If it's pinholed from rust, junk it and replace, it just isn't worth the hassle. Changing the tank isn't difficult, hardest bit was wrestling the new tank into place and...

    Bad Vibration...Ideas?

If you're driving in snow/ice with an open differential, then that is exactly what happens. 4wd just means that all the wheels are driven, not that they are driven at the same speed (unless you have locking diffs). If you're booting it, then you'd probably get vibration too...

    E-brake

Mine (though we call it a "hand brake" in Europe) is not particularly effective... and I drive a manual. I normally just shove it into first when parking (let it roll a bit as it goes in, less likely to pop out), if I'm parking on a hill I will use the hand brake, but I don't trust it to hold...

oil cooler = nervous me ??

If (and that's a fairly big if) you can find one, you might be able to use the oil cooler from a diesel XJ, they came with one as standard. Don't know if it was due to the engine being worked hard (small engine, big car) or because it was expected that they would be used for towing, but someone...

    More than 85 MPH!!

UK uses MPH and signs distances in miles. Count down markers (at junctions) can be in either yards or metres. Truck speedos are in MPH, but the speed restriction is in km/h. Fuel is sold in litres, but economy is calculated in miles per gallon (UK gallon). Vehicle weight is measured in metric...

Motor Mount DISASTER -- Neep opinions please!

Can you get a nut splitter in there? Most motor factors will stock them if you don't have one. I have a set, but they get very little use, Murphy's law clearly states that when you need it, you won't have room...

Chrysler sent the list of my factory installed components...

If it's a '92, you might have better luck (and a larger wallet afterwards) going to a Renault garage. The Cherokee was designed during the AMC-Renault years and was sold in France as a Renault until about '93-'94 when Chrysler started "officially" Importing them for the European market. Parts...

My diesel XJ is on the road!

Well, mine has been on the road for the first time in a while. Gave up playing with the starter and tow-started the heap. Engine runs sweetly (for a diesel) and everything seems to work except for the oil pressure gauge (maxes, drops with rev's - dodgy sender?). Drove it down to the local...
