It will be fine. I ran my 98 on front wheel drive for 2 days while doing some drive shaft/SYE work. No seal needed. As stated above, the factory did it for us on the 97+ ones.

If you can gat ahold of a spare set of stock shackles, you can cut off the original loop and use it. It would be the perfect size, and cheap.

I seem to remember helping a guy with shocks some years back and they were on the inside of his springs. Anybody ever pulled out the bump stop and relocate the shock there? You'd never lose the spring.
