I had a saga of trouble with the closed system in my old 89 XJ. New radiator, 2 bottles, 2 caps, water pump, and nothing fixed it until I did the cheap conversion and switched over to the open system. I used this part and got rid of the pressure bottle.

I would change the oil and forget about it unless the sound is really bad. My 89 overheated many times before I figured out the problem and is still running fine. My little sister owns it now and abuses it. The 4.0s are pretty tough engines.
Any update? My 98 is having similiar problems, high idle in park sometimes and and low idle sometimes when stopped and in gear. Does't do it all the time though. I cleaned the tb and it seemed to help for a little while but problem surfaced a few days later.
Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks.
I had the Ranch 5000's on my 89 XJ with Upcountry springs and it was a rough ride. I would not buy them again. The do have a lifetime warranty, but as another poster stated, your kidneys don't have a a lifetime warranty. They are an off road type shock, beware. My 98 with the factory UC shocks...
The fan motor might be toast. Try another one if you can get ahold of one cheaply. I guess you could run it straight off the battery too and see if it kicks on.
My 98XJs electric fan would only kick on for a few minutes and then wouldn't pull very hard after a few minutes of running. After...
Great to hear it worked out!!!
Another reason to change the fluid in our AW4 frequently. I have pulled fluid (from the plug) from my AW4s in my 89 and 98 XJs at least a couple times a year and they have always shifted great. Fluid is cheap and its easy to do.
I would bet the belt is too loose. Both XJs (89 & 98) I've owned have had the Cherokee Squeal when the belt stretched and was a tad too loose. Tighten it a little more and see if gets better. Most people, including myself, underestimate the correct tension of the belt.
I doubt dirty fluid would cause the box to go bad that quick either.
I thought about using the Mopar reman on my XJ but hadn't heard much about them. Glad to hear its holding up for you.
If half of their reman parts failed they probably wouldn't loose much money. Think about it, they charge a core charge or you have to give them your old busted pump. The reman folks clean it up, replace a seal or two and sell it back. The AZ power steering pump I was looking at with the lifetime...
I believe it is one year. What good is a lifetime warrantee when you are miles from home and the POS fails? I honestly don't enjoy replacing parts every few years or in some cases months. Seems to me parts always break at the worst possible times.
I had a AZ water pump fail and it was 6 months...
