thats what i thought but didnt understand why it would only do it once it got into closed loop mode. are there sensors in there that only activate when in closed loop mode?
i have a 98 that runs fine when in open loop mode but as soon as the code scanner shows activity with the 02 sensor it runs REAL bad.
i just replaced the upstream sensor about 4 months and maybe 6k miles ago.
when the car is started the spark advance on live data keeps going between 8 and 12...
i drove it with the sensor unplugged for about 5-10 minutes without any change in running. and the engine was at operating temp when i unplugged it. only change was the check engine light came on
i dont have a good history on parts with this jeep. but the jeep does have 225k on it and i know they are supposed to be replaced as a maintenance item.
i realize unplugging the sensor is not a good test to see how it is functioning, but i would assume that it would run worse with it unplugged...
my 98 4.0 has had a rough idle and low mpg since i bought it. i checked the 02 sensors with a obd2 scanner and looked at live data graphes to see what they were doing.
the pre cat 02 sensor seemed to be changing voltage quickly and consistently while the downstream sensor was pretty lazy.

has light rust in the front corners of the roof and a little in the door sills. otherwise is clean.
im not sure on a price. what do you think it is worth?
hello,
i have a 98 Cherokee Classic that i am looking at either selling or trading in the near future. my family has gotten a little big for the XJ and looks like if nothing happens in my favor in the next month or so that i will be forced to get rid of it.
heres the specs:

only reason i am even going black friday shopping is because the wife is making me. and work has mandatory shut down for the weekend, so i really have no excuse not to go.
i hate people
no noises or anything. it happens randomly while driving which makes it harder to use the mechanical gauge to test. im not overly worried about the oil pressure being low, just didnt know if this was common on the 4.0 or if i should really worry
searched for a bit and didnt find exactly what i was looking for.
98 XJ, 4.0 auto. 220k
with the engine warm when i am driving at about 55-60 mph i notice the oil pressure drops down very low. close to the first line on the gauge. a shift into neutral and a quick rev brings it back to normal...
im not sure about the xj, but on most vehicles, when the defroster is turned on, the a/c compressor is turned on to supply drier air to the vents. makes getting the fogginess off the windows much easier. that may be why it is running the aux fan
what is a red herring? i have not heard of this. i figured someone was trying to fix the rough idle with plugs and whatnot, but needed ideas to check out.
hello,
searched and couldnt find exactly what i was looking for, so dont burn me if the info is here somewhere.
i just got my newest addition to my xj list. it is a 4.0 with 218k on it. runs and drives great but it idles a little rough. nothing to bad, not like its going to die or anything...
