97 XJ starting to run hot

+1 birchlakeXJ. Just because your water pump is not leaking does not mean it is still good. If the impeller is eroded it will not leak, it just does not circulate. Use an IR thermometer and check the actual temperature at the t-stat housing. It could be a coolant temp sensor.

    Electric Cooling Fan

Sounds like the previous owner was trying to mask an overheating problem. There is no reason to hot wire the cooling fan. I would check your entire cooling system. A bad water pump or scaled up radiator will cause overheating. If you have a mechanical clutch fan check it as well. I have...

I don't think my clutch fan is turning on

You may have to replace the radiator or the water pump. Just because it is not leaking does not mean the WP is OK. The impeller tends to erode and not circulate coolant. My '89 XJ had 190,000 miles and I tried to flush the system three times. I got no results. My E-fan would not engage when...

    OIL Pump question

If the pan is already off then by all means replace the pump. You will not want to pull the oil pan again if you do not have to. The part will be for the year of the lower end of the engine.

    oil pressure issue

What is your engine coolant opeational temperature? High coolant temps will lower the viscosity of the oil. 120,000 miles seems awful early for main bearing failure but it happens. Failure that early usually means poor preventative maintenance. My '89 XJ has 194,600 miles and carries 25...

    oil pressure issue

When I first purchased my '89 XJ it had the same problem as yours. The first thing I did was replace the oil sending unit. However O'Reilly had two different sending units listed for an '89 W/ the 4.0L. Ensure you replace the sending unit with the proper replacement. I agree with the other...

89 got wet now wont start

I would remove, clean, and reattach all three grounds under the hood. Renix Jeeps are extremely ground sensitive. Also try pulling the coil and ignition module and cleaning the two posts that clip in the coil. I cleaned both posts and used OxGard to stop corrosion and facilitate a better...

Identify this vac line for me please

PCV hose perhaps? Do you have any hoses missing from your air intake?

    Bearing noise

The front differential and drive shaft both rotate in 2WD. The disconnect is made in the transfer case.

    Rust in my coolant!!!

I performed a complete cooling system overhaul last summer on my '89 XJ. It is really not that expensive. I replaced the radiator ($110), water pump ($50), upper and lower hoses ($40), thermostat ($10), HD clutch fan (from NAPA @ $50), and blower motor ($27). Check the forum threads for which...

    Joining the Military

Military service will open a lot of doors for you later on. Even if you retire out of the service you can still begin another career while you are still pretty young. Really cannot add much more than what has been posted here. Ask plenty of questions, that is what recruiters are there for...

    Tires

I run Uniroyal Liberator A/T on my '89 XJ here in Montana. They are pretty reasonable. They are good all around tires. With the wide range of temperatures here (-10 winter to over 100 summer) these tires seem to work great. They have a S rating of 100 and they clean themselves of snow and...

    Something positive about Obama...?!

I define a politician as an individual that distorts and misleads to get into office then uses that office to gain power and influence so he/she can obtain a high paying private sector position... such as a lobbist or consultant. Political parties are a smoke screen used to polarize a gullible...

    XJs in Movies

Lots of XJ's in the X-Files. The Air Force security used lots of white XJ's. Scully's brother had a silver XJ. A guy was living out of the back of an XJ in a CSI episode.
