this problem has been a bugger for some time now. Resolution was simple eliminate the low beam circuit altogether. I set up a new switch realy and lead into the low beam at the drivers side light and this has since resolved the problem. The hard part is that I never really figured out what it...
I had a similar problem with my 93 xj too. it took me some time to find a solution. What I did was to wire in a new 30 amp relay and switch and completely bypass the low beam circuit altogether. took some guidance from gojeep.com's website on his loom upgrade.

Pelican, this has been an ongoing problem for some time now.
items that have been addressed:
new headlight switch
new relay that is connected to auto shut off for the lights I believe
new ground at the switch
fuses are good
cleaned connection under airbox
lamps are new

Well I drove home tonight in the dusk/dark and on my commute the lights seemed to work fine with no cut outs. I am still skeptical though. I will check the connection by the airbox later in the week. Is the connection under the airbox or right near it...I can pull it out to get in there and...

switch plug is good and so is switch
added a better ground to the headlight switch...night driving will tell if it is working. while idling...

when installing my head unit after my jeep was burglarized I had to dig up a new mount from the bone yard. it is a bracket that is held in place on top via a spring type hanger and the two screw locations attach to the dash surround. May need some new holes drilled into it if the bracket does...
no the gauge ights are on when the lights are on but no dimmer function. everything works fine except that the ability to adjust the intensity of the lights is gone. The radiois aftermarket.
the fuse panel was burnt out for the radio door lock and interior light circuit. Bypassed it with an inline fuse and spade connectors.
The gauge cluster was a bad relay wiring; rewired and works...but dimmer still is bad.?
