Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Well, she's a driver finally!

Got the tires I had gotten from Mike that had been sitting around mounted up finally.

Got done doing some final tweaking (centering of the axle, toe adjustment, link adjustments, etc.) done today.

Temp tags acquired, so time to put some miles on it and start slowly working out small things.

Build thread update to follow this evening :D

Looking good Justin!

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I think I may gut the factory plastic dash out and replace it with some aluminum panel hung off some tube as well as doing the same for the center console and shifter area .

Re: The Colorado BS thread

How hard is it to pull the 4.0 from the auto still in the vehicle

Not hard, one of the biggest PITA is the two top bolts on the tranny bellhouse that bolt to the engine. They are torx and just in a awkward spot.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

How about reinstalling an Engine? Is this something I could do by myself? Still not sure what route I'll take, but if this is doable myself then perhaps it can become a lengthy project later once I decide on engine options.
I feel pretty good on pulling the engibe, I'm more concerned with reinstall trying to line up bolts again.

You can but will be a lot easier with some extra hands especially to match things up and check clearance. Sure you could get some help.

I will say for me and trying to get my WJ sorted out its been a shit shoot finding rebuilders that aren't trying to rape and pilage me or aren't months out. In some ways I want to get a long block and DIY but it would also be nice to just drop it off and have someone else go through it.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I'm not telling you how to spend your money, but, I am breaking down my time commitment to drive to Severance and help pull, and install an engine.

BTW, I have an engine hoist.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Yeah, I'm not ruling out getting a used h.o.4.0L if its Healthy, I'm curious though, why would you like to rebuild vs buying new long block?

Anyone see these before and any trust worthy places for used?

rebuilt auto engines 1999 JEEP Cherokee

Honestly, for the price of a used 4.0 vs a rebuild just spend the few extra hundred bucks and get a fully fresh engine.

Rebuilds are cheaper than long blocks. Example on my 4.7 I can get a rebuild for about 2k vs a long block is about 3k. Most of the difference is some rebuilders don't replace everything. If pistons are still good they just put new rings on. With the long block pretty much everything is replaced that can be. Also long blocks are ready to go, vs a rebuild I'm out for weeks until I get the engine back. So there the convenience fee. That S&J place is actually who I'm considering for the 4.7 I need. They have decent reviews, warranty and price isn't terrible. Maybe we can get a packaged deal!

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Doesn't hurt to ask lol.
I'm registering s&j 2199$, shipping is 175$, 80$ if i get lift gate service, but that wouldn't help unless they can back up the driveway to the garage I think.
2454$ total until core is picked up, =2054$

Plus I'll need to find a stand, is 1ton plenty?

Lift gate is just so they can unload it. Driver will probably have a pallet jack that he can get it close to where it needs to go if you have the space cleared. $10 bucks and a clear path you'll have it right to your garage! You can also pick it up at a drop station if you got a truck they could load it on. I prefer to just pay the lift gate fee.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Yeah just got off the phone. 175$ is shipping to a dock in Denver, 205$ to the house+ 80$ lift gate fee. The guy said they will charge 150$ if they have to move it 5ft into a building.

I'm thinking dock, should an engine hoist be able to get the new block out of a suburban?

Probably, if possible, have it loaded with the back of the engine toward the back of the Suburban.

My dad and I were able to grab the case our block cane in and lift it out of the truck and walk into the garage. It’s not that heavy.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

There's a used motor in Denver from a 99xj, 600$. I guess thats about normal. Does anyone recommend against Used? The jeep was wrecked from the back they said.

Is it Worth checking out you think? if so anything is there anything I should pay attention to to look it over?
1 month smoke/ knock warranty

Perhaps a long block is worth the piece of mind, but 600 vs 2000$

Thoughts?

Re: The Colorado BS thread

If your jeep is your "baby", something you intend to have for a long time, is your daily driver, etc, I can see justifying the rebuilt engine expense.

The $600 engine depends on the mileage on it. These days, finding anything with less than 100K is a rarity. Beyond that it really depends on what you can determine by looking at the donor vehicle - the maintenance it's had, how it appears to have been cared for - or not cared for, etc. Obviously if it's not been pulled yet, go hear it run. Otherwise, ask if they did a compression test and noted the results at all. If it's a lumpy black coated greasy block or if it's reasonably or even remarkably clean (and not having been pressure washed).

Used is always a gamble...... for $600 you can afford to get a bad one and do it over again a couple times if need be and still be below the cost of a rebuilt..... but are you willing/prepared to do that?

Smokeyyank offered up the engine out of his '93 he's parting. I'd jump on that one if budget is your main concern. He's a good dude, I'll vouch for him....:D And he has a lengthy history with the engine and knows it to be a solid runner. Dunno it's current state, but maybe it could be fired up before you shake hands on it........?
