Membership and Chapter Enhancement Program

I want every member of this chapter to know they have every right to ask questions about the running of this chapter. Neither myself or any other of the chapter leadership have any desire to hide anything from membership. The problem I have with how this thread started to go is when a person posts up and has a tone that simply sounds like stirring the pot and creating unnecessary drama. This is one of the primary reasons we have had difficulty retaining our members the last couple of years. I see this chapter as a club which happens to communicate by way of the forum. With any forum you will occasionally (or more often in many cases) experience people who seem only to want to cause trouble. This kind of activity must stop. We have lost some respected, long time members lately because they became fed up with the bullshit. I will not stand for that kind of crap while I am president of OUR club. If you have questions or concerns, by all means please post up so we can address them for you, but please give the leaders the respect of not coming out swinging right off the bat. We don't need ridiculous drama on our forum. It is not good for our club. Please have the courtesy to keep the best interests and the reputation of our club in mind when you post here. To answer kejtar's questions, I failed to recognize the opportunity this last year. Changes are taking place to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Agreed.

This is why I said this earlier:

I forgot to reply to Rockclimber of which applies to your question.

Yes. All of the above. Start threads. State what you would like to see. Volunteer to help out. Communicate when you see things you like and do not like. The 'keep it private back channel' crap that has been mentioned on here is :bs: as we are a community and everyone is involved. It is the members chapter and we need to work together. Remember the BOD works for us.

I totally want to see this happen but nothing has been done!!!

Start a thread and vote on it ;)
thanks avery i haven't laughed that hard in a while!
why don't you volunteer ? lead by example instead of throwing mud.
there is a reason to keep attacks back channel, so you don't turn off even more new members.

"the BOD works for us" well then you failed us by not letting socal BOD know that a grant was available.

and if "everyone is involved" who cares about what color your name is?
do something positive and proactive rather than wait lurk and troll.

Kayle, I know you've got a beef with Avery but please let this drop. You've said your piece and he has, now it's just getting circular.

Personally I don't think it is the big BOD's job to babysit the little BOD, that's coming from somebody whose allegiances lie with the little BOD these days.

Think of it like this. Insisting that the BOD keep track of the chapters participation would lead toward micro-management of the chapters by national. I don't think I only speak for myself when I say I would not want the National BOD to be telling us how to do our job and constantly asking for TPS reports.

With regards to us National should be providing us with the items they do (insurance, forum, membership processing) and letting us do our thing. The only event they should step in would be if a chapter had to be revoked or an entire BOD canned for declaration of duty, in that case national would have to run it until the special election; neither of these things has happened in the history of the club (we have had chapters dissolve, never revoked).

Geoff, I hear you about the "VS" and I understand. I get it.

One thing that I still do not understand is that did the NAT BOD make sure that the socal BOD knew that it had access to a grant?

According to Avery, yes, the info was there in a sticky, and he didn't realize until after it was too late when he was cooking the books... I mean doing taxes.

Chapter representatives are expected to take part in the national BOD. There is an eyes-only forum that all those who take part in the BOD have access to; this includes all sitting officers, past national presidents, some appointed officers (head moderator, website administrators, etc.), and chapter representatives. As I believe has been stated already chapter reps are typically the president of the chapter.

From what I have gathered (I do not have access to the national BOD forum) there were threads posted in that forum about the MGE program in 2012 as well as the program being discussed in the BOD meeting minutes. Chapter reps are welcome to take part in all BOD discussions, they just can't vote on them. I believe this to be the case based on my past experience in the national BOD forum (both from a national and local role).

Basically what happened is there was very little chapter participation on the national level. Because none of the other SoCal chapter officers or advisers (myself and other past presidents) have access to the BOD forum we could not alert John of the goings on. While it is technically expected that the chapter rep. should report the goings on of national to his/her BOD in practice that does not happen very much so that wasn't exactly a red flag.

The bottom line here is that because of discussion both behind the scenes and here in this thread John has passed the chapter representative role off to Karstic, the VP of the chapter. Karstic will take an active role in the national BOD and this will not happen again. I will also be taking a more active part as advisor to the SoCal BOD throughout this year.

I also take responsibility in this as if I had been paying more attention to the goings on of national (via the member news and information) I would have seen the MGE program and the lack of chatter in chapter BOD forum. I have been known to prod things when I see what I think are not being taken care of.

2013 will be a model year, we will come out of this year a much stronger chapter.

Cool.

I'm glad we could have this discussion. Lets do it more often....

:)

Well I feel silly--I've been the Chapter Treasurer for 3 years, and have never known/been told/seen that I have access to the National BOD. My apologies!

Remi, it wasn't personal.

Cracker, as a weird "if", if you had said that you saw the oversight while doing taxes, and were wondering about it, it might have had a somewhat less aggressive tone. It felt to me like it came out of left field, quite randomly.

All that being said, fixes are in place, progress is being made, and we're working on getting the MGE funds aimed at, well, Membership Growth & Encouragement =).

And yes, this is our Model Year!! Thank you now, and in advance, to all who are helping make our chapter ROCK!

Ah. I thought I read the earlier statement as "any chapter BOD member has eyes-only" viewing privileges in National BOD. I'll go back to sleep now... Thank you for clarifying.

What are the plans for the Membership and Chapter Enhancement Program this year?

Just curious; shouldn't this thread be in the member business section?

At current there are no plans. I'd like to do something different this year because the old SCF camping arrangement was under-utilized and had a high administrative burden.

It should but it predates that forum. It now is. :)

Cool. I'd just hate to see the funds go unrequested and unused.
