96 xj sport 5.3 swap

that what im running into doing research, my xj has the older style dash so i can likely move it farther forward since the radio bezel area doesn't stick out as much
Mine is in an '87. My Icom ham radio is in place of the cigarette tray and it still fits. I only have about an inch or so of above the knob though (custom console that i built). Also the shift tunnel is cut out at the shifter sits below the factory console about an inch, I wanted it low.

what model is your shifter?

got the tcc relay wired up today, and got the trans shifter linkage sorta set up, i still dont have 2 or 1 but i think im going to get a shifter anyhow so itll at least get me down the road for now after i change the cable out.

i think i have a solution for my vss 5v reference as well hopefuly it will be moving soon

and the replace ment switch i got wont fit my lock cylinder for some reason so still no 12v key

Did you get anything done on your shifter?

Did you get anything done on your shifter?

yup!

after some debate on weather i wanted to fab a new base plate or cut up the factory shifter i decided to use what i had, also for reference heres the PN of the shifter: Lokar XCOS64L60EB id say its damn near perfect and with a factory 5 speed shift boot at a glance i think it'll look stock

i cut the mechanism and shifter stop rail out leaving just the base plate which will still bolt to the floor like factory but leaving a flat space to bolt the new shifter in place. im also going to tweak the angle it sits at so i can hang on to it comfortably

anyone have some insight on the second cable that keeps the key in the ignition when the shifters not in park? with out it connected i cant get the keep out can i just disconnect it from the steering column and all be good?

on another note i "fixed" the no key 12v problem, the ignition switch was fine, turn out i blew the maxi fuse for the circuit and completely missed it when i looked over them before, in my defense i was likely hungry.

You should be able to disconnect it at the column easily enough. Worst case you can "wire" it open at the shifter end if need be.

I missed stuff all the time while working on mine. It happens. Something you look at 4 or 5 times "looks" right until you look at it the next day or after a break :)

Buy a handle of crown, and use the bag as a boot

did a bunch of of wire clean up today, got all my temporary grounds/hots permanently wired. also installed the over flow bottle and filled it

now for some reason when 12v key is applied to the pcm its not powering on.. all the grounds are connected, 12v key and constant are all wired into proper sources, even ran a jumper to the 12v switched relay from the battery and nothing.. ive got a bad feeling the pcms fried from when i blew the 12v key fuse

IIRC there's a constant 12v for the PCM and a GROUND controlled power for the keyed 12v.

what bothers me is that i had it running several times already with my temp connections and now nothing even though ive rechecked everything by by passing the new connections and the pcm aint doing squat

hey guys, been a while.

been super busy with life and work and have ghad barley any time for xj stuff.

the jeeps in the garage finally to make the hoa happy

had some time today so i fiddled with the lokar shifter and finally have it bolted in place where i want it, just need to get the cable adjusted and all the brackets tightened down,

the good news is that the pcm in not fried! just a power issue at the fuse block

Good to hear about the PCM. Looking forward to more updates :)

got the misfire worked out, turns out the new delphi coil i bought to replace the one i damaged with hoist chains was a dud.

popped in the old coil with some rearranging for conformation and no more mis fire :)

got the low fan wired in at least and got it to op temp with no issues with over heating so far(its only 65 right now so not to suprising.)

have a tps code(got the obd2 port wired finally) i lost one of the screws so i think its an out-of-adjustment issue

i did some tweaking on the shifter, i had an issue with the cable binding and i realized i put one of the brackets in the wrong spot and the cable sheath is just sliding thru it. just need to move it and bolt the trans mount in and i should be able to drive this thing!

finally got the shifter working right, got the cel wired(backwards i think), trans mount is finally bolted in and i actually drove it around the block!!

HOLY COW

i knew numbers wise it was more powerful but i didnt expect take off's to exceed my expectations!

any way for some reason its not shifting out of first, so ill have to look into that :/

got the tach and speedo working, to get the speedo working i needed to get 5v reference to the sensor so i broke apart a cheep usb car charger an soldered wires to it to send the 5v, with the 34 tooth speedo gear its actually pretty close, may need a slightly different gear tho

shifter is done, kinda, i cant manually shift to 1-2 because part of the floor is hitting the heim bolt :/ but i have to pull the case since the AA adapter is leaking :'( lsxj initiation tradition lives on

i did some tweaking and maybe got my shifting problem worked out, ill test it out in the morning
