Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Jeep's are not allowed to smoke...neither do Puffins'
no-puffin-magnet.jpg

how many miles on it though?

150k. The red one that was in the yard when you came by.

ah I see got it going then huh.Well hope it is just old residue from head...you know what it is next then.I had good luck using the silver can "restore" 6 cylinder formula on the original engine I had in mine.I had a bad lifter tick and after about 3 oil changes using that stuff it went away and ran real good great...I am not a fan of snake oil but that crap did work.I just installed my stroker I finally built..man it is awesome I may say.$2000 in parts and labor-machine shop-I built it.I do see some cross hatch marks on that cylinder...but the oil burnt brown stain on it does'nt look happy.Run it for a bit, drive it,and see if it clears up.By the way how did the plug look on that one?

Gotta be either the crud on the pistons or a bad ring or six. Drive it for a bit and see what happens...

Oh, and check your ccv system, make sure it isn't puking all that oil into the intake due to blowby and a plugged or half plugged CCV orifice or line.

Do a compression test. You have replaced the head, so I assume a new HG was put on. I would bet that you have a low cylinder.............or two.

Good thing is that fixing these motors is actually easy and cheap when compared to other motors, so try not to cheap out too much(not saying you have.........looks like you know what your doing) when buying parts.

I had the valve cover put in the vat with the head to eliminate all that as well. The line is free and clear. I'm going to double check all the lines again when I get home. I'm quite sure they were good to go. I do have some oil in the filter box but it wasn't flooded. Just greasy feeling.

This is the bottom side of the head before it was reworked. I would have said headgasket but I wasn't loosing any coolant... :dunno:

Compression test results before the top end rebuild.

What's a head gasket?

it will compression test fine with a bad head gasket..... a cylinder leakdown test will point out your issue, esp if its a cracked ring (just had a 4.2 come through with this issue

to be honest your pistons look like shit, you need to drive it for a bit to really know. The ranger motor i built smoked out my garage (and the house attached to it!) when i first started it, still running two years later not a puff.

Yeah, I know. It took all I had to not build the whole thing... I don't plan to keep this thing much longer and I just want to keep it going well enough to get me back and forth to work.

I was guessing the head gasket was bad by the color of the plugs. Looks like coolant to me. I'm probably reading the color wrong.

The compression test I did was a simple pressure tester. Not a leak down.

I cleaned the tops of the pistons as best I could without removing them.

Really slow with a brass wire brush and a shop vac. They looked much better when I put it back together.

I wonder what a shop would charge me for a leak down test.

Yessir, it smoked up the neighborhood when I first started it up but i'm sure that was primarily from my oily/greasy hands all over everything.

Hopefully, once I put finish fixing the other couple issues I have to address she'll smooth out and quit smoking. If not... it's just going to smoke.

You need to live closer ;) i have a snap-on leakdown tester at work..... if its running smoother it seems like it might be alright, just try to pay attention to any power loss or suggishness.

You need to take her out and blow the carbon out :firedevil

I hear the rev limiter knocks soot out of ports and off valves pretty well.

Got my head back today.... she was warped.... oh yea it was nto my heep but a 97 I picked up for a song... ran but like shit.

may have scored a roof rack for my xj. now i need some front spacers and an adjustable tracbar. i guess i've gotten to the point where i'm ready to trim the fenders now that my body isn't exactly pristine anymore. i guess it's the price of a good time in the woods, but that's the reason i keep getting xj's.

This is the plan. Drove it to work today.

I also was having issues with a headlight.

Pulled the housing out to find a cooked plug.

Replaced the plug and went ahead and put the crappy ebay "HID"s in that my buddy gave me.

That's exactly what they are. Crappy. They'll be coming out when I get home this afternoon...

They constantly flicker, the passenger side only comes on half the time and pattern is AWEFUL. I was blinding folks all the way to work this morning.

I changed a u-joint in an axle shaft last night, first for me. Proof that I am indeed, a badass! :D Those who know me know why I am proud. My buddy replaced one for me a couple weeks ago. busted a cap(Its a 760, I thought they were strong :D) on one when he was tapping it in with a hammer so had to get another one sent to me(Drivetrain America rocks BTW) Honestly I thought it was gonna be a huge pain in the ass for me but it was not too bad once I figured it out. Now to get a unit bearing to replace the one I took off and I'll swap these shafts back in and replace the joints on the others.

I was supposed to lay tile in our kitchen this weekend but our helper had to work at his day job so it got postponed a week, which worked out good actually. It would've been a big push to try and get it done this weekend so it was for the best to be honest. Because I had a free day, I spent it enjoying the FANTASTIC weather working on the Ram. New 35" Pro Comp Xtreme All Terrains mounted on Laramie Alloys, 2" Lift in the front, 1" Add-A-Leaf rear, Poly Track Bar bushing upgrade, aftermarket heavy duty extended sway bar end links that eliminate the crappy ball and socket OEM design, and a full set of Bilstein 5100's. I did a rough alignment on it to set the toe and it drives very nicely. I may need to replace the steering stabilizer too though... still had it shimmy (less frightening way to describe death wobble, LOL!) just a tad on a small bump in a left hand turn. It did this before and I was thinking the track bar bushings might be the issue but couldn't really tell so I just upgraded them anyway! Fortunately for my wallet, I have been collecting these parts for a while so it wasn't a huge hit all at once.

Personally I think it looks fantastic!

Looks awesome Tyler! Always been a fan of that body style Ram, and the fact it's a Cummins makes it that much better!

Did a day trip up to the mountains today to meet my parents for lunch and wander around a bit. A couple of weeks ago I picked up some new (to me) wheels and tires for the Acura, as well as did the brake upgrade I've been wanting to do for quite some time. Been itching to take it up to the mountains since to see how it handled on twisty roads...as well as stopped. I'm very pleased with the results.

I love bolt on upgrades....
