Is it worth doing a 4.6 stroker

Tom do you really like yours?? Cuz I talked to Frank and he said he hated his and he said eather rebuild the 4.0 or go straight to a V8. Ive also talked to a few other who said they dont like the stronger and its not ment for CO because it dosent do great in the mountains and bogges down once you hit the foot hills

It is by far the best upgrade I have ever made. It is simply a pleasure to drive, on and off the trails. The low end torque really works well on the trail. Well I have over 100k miles of driving the stroker and I would have to say that it is ideally suited for Colorado. The higher compression helps keep the power as you go up in altitude. In fact, I have the base parts to build another sitting in my garage and have been thinking of building another.

You know any shops that would be willing to build mine for me? I just want to drop the dang thing off and have it built. O really do you have all then parts? Or what re you missing, be willing to sell those parts :D or build mine :D

i was wondering about the smog test on a 4.6 or 4.7 got a 89xj from my tow yard for 350.00 with a stroker in it ,was going to put it in my 94 xj ,its got a header and cat back on it ...will there be any problems with Calif smog testing ?
You would have problems with CA smog. Not because of the stroker but because of the age difference. You can't install an 89 engine into a 94. It has to be same age as or newer than the vehicle it's going into. You might be able to sneak it by if it were at least an HO, but going RENIX into an HO will be easy to spot when you smog it.

How would they know? Do they run the numbers off the head and block for everyone who comes in?

Not being sarcastic. Just curious. Our emissions testing here is pretty simple.

From what I've read and been told, you CAN put an older engine in a newer body, but ALL emissions equipment for whichever of the two is newer MUST be in place and fully functional.

So in your case, your 89 engine would have to have all 94 emissions equipment (for that size engine) in place and working.

depends on what it looks like. on my mustang, they noticed it was a newer motor, even though it was physically the same. they look over cars like that and hondas, etc with a fine tooth comb. with my van, they don't even look at the engine most of the time. pulling the dog house off inside so you can see it is a PITA so they generally just pop the hood, which shows the fan belt and battery basically. if it's an unsuspecting vehicle, they probably wont give it a second glance.

God California is run by Nazis...

its not that bad. we dont have the safety inspections that a lot of east coast and mid-west states have. a simple sniffer in the tail pipe and visual under-hood inspection making sure smog equipment is there is all they do. well that and they make sure the gas cap works right. but its not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. maybe when you get into engine swaps and what not its worse than others, but when it comes to the normal biannual smog test, its pretty lax

agreed. CT was way worse. so was VT.

The e-test in Canada is pretty much the same as CA I think, except for the two additional checks.

- 50/50 ethylene glycol/maple syrup mix in the coolant
- cat has not been replaced with a beaver

we have the same beaver test, except they're checking for escaped inmates.

A 94 would be plugged into the OBD scanner. If it's an 89, i'm not sure if they have OBDI on them or not, but I know the sensors and electronics are different between Renix and HO. The readings would probably come back wrong, non-existent, if even possible to get them. If your vehicle is OBD equipped, it gets the sniffer and plugged in. Non-OBD get sniffer and gas cap leakdown or whatever.

Not in CA. I've checked into it myself when I was thinking of swapping a small block into my Nissan 720.

At least when it comes to engine swaps.

:roflmao:
My smog shop doesn't even know what color my jeep is :) Ofcourse they charge almost triple for this luxury :D '87 passed with flyin colors!
Wait, are you advocating an illegal practice? That's not kosher...;)

RENIX XJs (and MJs) are "pre-OBD," and therefore have to be tested manually. I usually take my FSM in with me to prove this point (because I keep getting docked for "non-functioning CEL/MIL." I have to prove that it's not supposed to work - having the window is a holdover from the GM V6-171 engine, which was purchased with its own OBD-I control setup. The AMC engines didn't get OBD controls until ChryCo converted them for 1991.

I think I misunderstood, or someone else did. The question I had was about swapping in an earlier engine into a later jeep. I wasn't even considering swapping the control systems.

For example. The stroker I built for my daughter's TJ, is a 1990 Renix era 4.0 block, a 1995 HO head, but all the Fuel, exhaust, and emmisions control are 1998 TJ. Would any state have an issue with this? I can't see why they would, its the same block just made earlier.
