100,000 mile maintenance?

I have an 01 XJ (mall crawler sigh...) with a small lift. It has seen mild trail use, fore roads etc, and is my DD.

It just clicked over 100,000 miles and all I've ever done to it is change the oil and one set of brakes.

I need it to last another 100,000 and be as reliable as possible on long trips.

What sort of preventative maintenance would you reccomend?

I'm about to do the basics, oil (syn), plugs, wires, o2 sensors, I need an exhaust (fifty bucks for the header back, sans cat ;), with flowmaster for 50$ ) rotors because mine are thin, serpentine belt and repair a power window regulator.

Other than that what do you think I should do?

Thanks

Transfer case & Transmission fluid change, Use only dex 3 fluid.
Front & rear differential fluid change.
Engine coolant system flush/Change Thermostat & hoses if they look bad, Use only quality T-Stat NO JUNK.
Inspect/Adjust rear drum brakes.

PS: There are no plug wires on the 01 XJ.

LOL Yeah, I realized that about ten seconds before I got the email for your reply.

01's have an in tank fuel filter don't they?

Yes, newer model XJ's fuel filter are in-tank

You need to change your fluids more frequently. Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle. 100k on your original fluids is waiting too long.

Transmission (drain pan only) do that about 3 times over a period of time to freshen your fluid. Use Dex/Merc III compatible fluid.

Coolant has to be shot and dirty at 100k so flush/fill that (and 195 oem high quality thermostat from Jeep or the Stant Superstat), transfer case, differentials.

Plugs for sure! Serpentine belt; I like the Goodyear Gatorback. Ever replace air filter???

With maintenance, it's pay me now or pay me a lot more later.

Don't forget brake and power steering fluid. Even though I aready know everyone will tell you you need to use PS fluid, I'm going to tell you that I always use auto trans fluid, and that is fine. Many other vehicles with the same parts use ATF. Use proper brake fluid for the brakes though. I would flush out the brake lines using the gravity method with new brake fluid. If you need more info on that, just ask.

flush/replace ALL fluids including brake fluid (bleed brakes until only clear fluid comes out). serp belt, check/replace rad and heater hoses, check CCV lines. check ujoints and axle seals. check for play in the steering and suspension components.

basically give the vehicle a good once or twice over and check any part that is subject to wearing out.

might want to hit all the grease fittings too, check the battery cable connections and other grounds/power wire connections. check for vacuum leaks/cracked vacuum lines and elbows. there is really a lot of stuff that should be done. just do it one system at a time to cover everything.

LOL Yeah, fluids have been changed at regular intervals. I suppose my original post wasn't specific enough on that.

The cat is about to go bye bye with the new exhaust.

I was looking to see if thee was anything other than regular tune up and fluid maintenance.

Thanks for the responses.

Now that its officially "Broke-In", you will have many years of dependable service left! :D

why are you being stupid and removing the cat, and why so insistent about that? They don't reduce performance, are now fairly inexpensive, and it's quite illegal to do.

Either don't tell us you're removing it, or don't remove it. Pick one.

Don't be d**k, I got a new cat for mine for $70 (magnaflow) so it's not going to break the bank to replace it. Is there anything wrong with the original one? Like was already said removing it will produce zero improvement in HP at all. You need to retain some backpressure/restriction or you will actually lose low end power. You know the 1000-3000 rpm range that is all you ever really use. But if you really need to prove the fact that you don't care about the air you breath why don't you run the end of the exhaust up into the truck so you can breath it, not us.

Just because you don't have to go through emission testing does not mean removing or modifying the cat is legal in anyway. You guys kill me. It a federal law.

if you got 100k miles on it i would flush your radiator for sure and swap thermostat while your at it. tranny filter/new fluid. Diff oil front and rear. Check tcase fluid level, bleed brakes, change oil, check hoses, check plugs, grease everything, check fan clutch, run some chevron fuel treatment through it.

Stop being a smacktard - with 10 posts your already advising doing something illegal - way to make a first impression.

@ the original poster - OTHER than illegal suggestions I'll simply agree with everyone else.
My '89 has 330,000 I'm the second owner and have had it for 18 years I've put the majority of the 300,000 plus miles on it - when I was at 280,000 I did replace the clutch, primary and secondary clutch cylinders rear main seal and radiator (to a 2 core)
Other than that - I'd jump in it and drive back and forth coast to coast with no reservations.

General maintenance and you'll be fine.

What is it with people and hating cats? Is every redneck on here a dog lover or something?

i have gotten pulled over with no cat. i dont have emissions and the cop didnt mention anything about being a federal law. Does your lawn mower have a cat on it?

No. However, my lawn mower does not have a VIN and is not registered and insured. It doesn't have seatbelts or require a license to drive it, either. You're comparing apples and oranges.

The cop probably didn't realize your cat was illegal, seeing as he didn't crawl under and inspect. That does not change the fact that it was in fact illegal.

EDIT: seriously, if you absolutely insist on breaking the law by doing this, don't tell us, just like you didn't tell that cop who pulled you over.

Around here there is a LOT of trucks driving around with 2 foot (literally) lifts that look like they're one loose bolt away from mass destruction. Hawaiians put rednecks to shame, I'm talking tires completely BELOW the framerails. The cops don't do anything but that doesn't make it legal or right.
