yes i searched before i am asking.. how do or can you keep a alternator from dieing after submurging it in mud and water?its a dumb question.but i was woundering if anyone has agood idea for a shroud or cover of any type.:farmer:

I've had mine in water past the rockers and it lived and infact is still living. If it gets packed with mud wash it off and spray some WD-40 on it call it good.

if its full of mud, you can try rinsing it off and trying to clear as much of the crud out of there as possible. some have had good luck cleaning it, others have basicly torn it appart and cleaned it more in depth. the only good way to go about it is to not submarine the alt or cake it in mud. some have relocated the alt to where the ac compressor is and that helps keep some junk out of there

Yes the alt is in a retarded location. Dirty water is definitely bad, I've lost 3 alternators to muddy water. I can't really say about clean water, because I never drive in it.

Is there a way to move the alternator up to the AC compressor area and move the AC compressor down where the alternator was for an OBA setup?

YUp someone posted a thread about it today. I just read it.

I've submerged my alternator in a river once or twice and in a mud pit another time, no problems yet. Mine is still located down low with no splash shield or anything.

After going through 3 in rapid succession, I bought the expensive one with a lifetime warranty, and of course I cannot seem to break, even with repeated abuse. It kind of annoys me...

I've had my alternator clog up with mud and i kept losing charge. after it dried out i just tapped it with a hammer a few times and all the dried mud flaked out. It never went back to full charge ironically enough until i pulled my jeep nose first into a boat launch to wash it off, must've cleaned the brushes out...

my alternator goes swimming basically every time I'm out and can sometimes be submerged for the entire duration of the trail ride (that's florida wheeling for you). I've never had an alternator actually die. I just had to replace the cable going from the alternator to the PDC because it was corroded and actually snapped. Otherwise, the alternator has been fine. If it's been really muddy water, I try to spray it down. I think I will start spraying it with WD-40 or something afterwards also.

we used some electro contact cleaner to clean it and it brought up the amprage to pass status. the problem was that the rock that slammed in to it cracked the houseing.so i got a new one for 90 that isnt a re-man from a brother in law at a local parts store.i guess im pulling the ac and putting it up higher and makin a plastic shroud type deal for it. and its gettin a snorkel after it gets a lift.and for now ill let the big jeeps run the mudd and ill take the pics..........thatnks for the replys

As soon as you find you are losing charge, get out, keep the engine running, and beat on it with a BFH. After a few persuading smacks, the mud and water will come flying out and you will begin to recharge.

The little rubber cap that covers the terminal on the back helps. An 88 I had was missing it and everytime it got wet, it would short out and try to spark a fire. It was great because pouring water on the fire would just make it do it again.

a low mounted alternator is the equivelant of a cigarette smoker....
you think its fine, but its not gonna live as long. and science can prove it.

what does a snorkel have to do w/ an alternator?
i like TRYING to get water on my alternator in socal, and not being able to.

my friends are awesome to ask for advice. one offered to get me a for sale sign for my window to fix my problem........and buy a tj......and then he messed his up just a few days later in the same place......karma baby

the snorkel has nothing to do with it at all....it just got me thinkin about water , and all the things it can ,has and will effect. again, snorkel has nothin to do with a jeeps alternator.

If you have a snorkle and are doing deep water crossings then it won't matter if your alt. is on top or bottom of the motor. It's still going to get wet. I would just run it like it is and when it dies, buy one with a lifetime warr. and call it good.
