FSJ parts in a xj

NAXJA Forum User
i have a jeep j10 with a 304 v8 th400 trans and dana 20 tranfercase and dana 44s front and rear and i have been reading that those axles are only 2inchs wider on each side then my xj axles thats no problem with me. i know i am going to cut all the mounts off and reweld new mounts on and then prep and paint them but i was wonder how the 304, th400, and dana 20 fit in the xj i have read that it has been done but i just wanted to get some tips and advice on the build! i am going to reinforce the unibody,
i am just wondering what i would have to do wiring wise to get everything in the jeep to work?

What is the spline count on the input of the dana 20? I'm fairly certain it's passenger side drop, so you'll have to beat the crap out of your floor in order to fit it... If it's drivers' side drop, then I'd just stick with stock drivetrain and only swap the axles...

Either way, I wouldn't try to swap the 304/th400... you're getting less power than a stock 4.0, at the expense of gas mileage and major modification...

If your front axle is passenger side drop, I'd just research on how to mate the d20 to your transmission.

good luck!

i know there not going to be much of a difference in power but the 4.0 v6 puts out 177 hp @ 4750 rpm, 220 ft lb @ 4000 rpm and the 71 304 i have is 210 hp @ 4400 rpm and 300 ft lb @ 2600 rpm and i have just always loved v8s and i am going to build the motor up a lil when i swap it in the xj so i will be getting more power and quite a bit more torque and thats what i am aiming for and i just wanna build a rig that out of the of
the ordinary and not many people have build an xj and put an amc 304! and the transfercase is comeing out the passenger. i know its not going to be easy but i am determend to get this done so if you or any one has tips and advice it would be great! oh another thing i forgot to metion is that my xj is lifted 9 inchs with 35" tires and the 4.0 does like the 35s!

I wish these trucks would pop up closer to me! Especially if it's a pre-1975, I'd happily buy it (I have considerable use for a pickup truck, and a pre-smog Jeep J-series is first on my list. Second would be an MJ, third would be a pre-1975 Dodge...)

For information on V8 swaps into XJs, there is a Yahoo! group dedicated to that very subject - http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/v8cherokeexjowners/

Check it out, and see what's going on. Oh - and note that the bellhousing pattern should be the same between the 304ci V8 and the 242ci I6, and the AW4 is a rather stout transmission (it's used behind the Toyota turbo I6 in the Supra - and it's found in the RWD Van, pickup, Celica, and some Lexus models as well.)

ya i am thinking instead of put the th400 in i am going to try and run the aw4 thats behide my 4.0L i have read people have done it with 360 v8s no problem so i am guessing a 304 with be fine. I am going run switchs to control the trans but my question is when i go to do the swap should i take all the wiring and computer out of my j10 and put it in the xj or could i somehow get the engine runnning good with the xj's wiring? the only reason i ask is my j10 had manual locks and windows and alot less asscesseries then my xj and i wanna make sure after i do the swap all my xjs windows, locks, and stuff still work! if anyone can help that would be great!

ya i know its not an explorer forum i put 4.0l cause thats what the engine is! a 4.0 inline six, im not new to this! My xj is the an 87 so it is not the H.O 4.0L so i does have 177hp and 220 ft lb! and if your not going to help with my build then dont even leave a comment!

4.0 v6 puts out

UH.................what? This ain't no explorer forum. You mean 4.0L straight 6 and the HO puts out 190 hp!

who lit the fuse on your tampon? you are the one who typed in 4.0 V6. so dont get mad at us correcting you to Inline 6.

and getting all pissy here about not helping then dont leave a comment bit is a great way to get people to help.:dunce: you obviously know just what you want to do and are not willing to take info, suggestions, or critisism. so go ahead and do it your way.

You'll get better economy with the aw4, but you still didn't answer the passenger or drivers' side drop question... I'm curious as to what you are capable of doing here!

Keep the interior wiring, as long as you have power and ground, both it and the headlights will still work despite what you decide to do in the engine bay. The only real problem will be gauges... The speedometer is cable driven, so no worries there, but you'll have to wire up the tach, ops, and coolant temp. Those are all fairly easy in any case... I'm pretty certain the 4.0's OPS will actually thread into the 304's location, whether it was electronic or not. CTS's are typically universal also... Not sure how the tach will work out, it may just be as simple as running the signal wire from the 304's engine harness.

I can get you the pinout for your 87's firewall connector, that'll give you the information you need for the starter and ignition circuits.

good luck!

that would be great if you could get me the pin out on the firewall connector! and i am not sure the route i am going to go yet but i am just going to have to beat the floor in a bit! your input on what i should do would be great!
thanks

Okay my 2 cents, if you're are in fact going to do this. Swap the whole drivetrain because your axles are passenger side drop and you need a passenger side transfercase anyway.

Second is just why? I guess it would be original as not many people do it but in my opinion it's more awesome in the truck it came from. The 4.0 is plenty powerful and you'd be dealing with less headaches to build a stroker if you're already on 35s and 9 inches of lift. I'm assuming you're properly geared and what not if you're on that big of a tire. You'll have to regear the 44s as well as they came with 3.54s. Why waste all this time to just do something original.

Please don't ruin a perfectly good J truck.

i was thinking about stokeing the 4.0L inline six but that cost quite a bit
and i can understand why you dont want me to ruin a j10 but i was going to build the j10 untill i realize the frame rotting away from being a plow truck for the past 15 years before i got it! the rear shacles ripped rite out of the frame and now my bed is holding up the truck! the trucks way to far gone to do anything to it! i have starting parting it out already and sold a couple parts. i was upset when i realize how messed up the truck was but shit happens so that why i really decited to swap the motor and axles in my xj!

Well another thing is you're going from a fuel injected engine to a carb'd one. You're looking at spending alot of money or spending at least a few hundred and a lot of time on getting it to be fuel injected. That's an awesome drivetrain in the J10 you've got in my opinion but I just don't think it's right for an xj.

i plan on leaving it carburated for a while, then maybe someday down the road convert it to fuel injection.one question i have is what transfercase have passenger side front axle and will bolt to a aw4 trans?

Do you drive this thing to the trail? As much as I love my 360 backed by th400 it's a beast on gas and won't keep up with the guys with newer trannies.
