I replaced the valve cover gasket the other night and now my xj just leaks like its on the rag!!! oil pressure is normal and oil level is still fine but im getting worried. everytime i start the engine and let it run then turn it off the jeep just dumps a handful of oil. any thoughts?

Oil filter adapter. Change the o-rings.

what kind of gasket did you use?, how did you install it? and what did you torque it down to?

felpro all cork. installed it by unbolting the cover slipping it off put new gasket on. align it and bolt it back down. about 13 pounds

Doubtful that the oil filter adapter o-rings would cause you to lose so much oil...all of a sudden...right after changing the valve cover gasket.

Did you use any RTV on the cork gasket? I would've sprung for the rubber gasket. A little more money, but it seals much better.

ah. well i put like a dab to keep the gasket on the cover when i positioned it back on.
i usually spray one side of the gasket with spray on gasket adhesive, and out it on the valve cover, make sure it stays in place and then put it on. I find the cork always squeeze out of position. went with the rubber one, no prob,no leak

RTV is silicone sealant. Cork gaskets are real sensitive to overtightening the valve cover bolts/nuts.

+1

Not sure what the torque spec is - but its light. Also have to make sure both flanges are very clean and dry before putting on a cork gasket. My problem was that I had a dented valve cover flange - barely noticeable unless you are oil under pressure.

i would check the very back of the gasket. i did mine once and it didnt seat right on the very back by the firewall and leaked like crazy. i could easily tell just by running my finger back there and the gasket had somehow been pushed under the valve cover and wasnt around the edge anymore. i probably hit it upon installation. i dont think overtightening would result in a sudden massive leak. but it could be a contributing factor.

Seems that the cover is warped. im looking for a new one but to no luck. dealer wants 300 plus fopr a new one! where would you recomend going. besides pick a part lol.

its worth the 2 bucks to stop by the yard and look for a cover in good condition. I mean new is nice but you could get lucky and save money. Or Ebay maybe.

From your profile it says your jeep is a 89.. If so you have a cast alum valve cover.. What I recommend is finding a stamped steel one from a 97 or newer and make sure to get the metal grommets for the bolts. Then buy the fel-pro silicone gasket set from Summit and that will stop the valve cover leaks..

Or this is always an option too, its a package deal from Crown...

That kit comes with the $40 metal rubber gasket and new "bolts" which require a hex key socket to tighten. I got the hex key socket set at Harbor Freight for $4.99
