The Black Pearl

Update, dug out my axle stand and started modifying it to hold a second axle. The square tube frame is the original stand, I scored some interesting drops from a laser cutting table and some 1.25Ē OD steel tubing. Hereís what Iím thinking..

Iím planning on putting the 9Ē on the jack stands down low. The 44 will go up higher. I traced the radius of the 44ís axle tube onto the plate brackets. Hereís a little jig I set up on the work bench.

These 3/16Ē hot rolled plate drops had cut outs to match the radius of the tube I had.

The overall stand is a bit narrow and tall now that itís set up for holding two housings. Not sure how I want to address that issue but I suspect the stand will be fairly easy to tip over when moving these things around. Weíll see though. Iíll be adding more gussets to triangulate the round tubing as well.

Re: The Black Pearl

What is the stand for? Just storage and ease of moving the axles as you work on them?

Correct. The stand will help in transport as well as allow me to wrench on the axles...to some degree. Itís nearly impossible to man handle these housings when theyíre fully assembled like a D30.

Nice work nate. I like the detail on the 2x6 install. Going to be doing mine on my v2 rig soon. Any reason you went with only two kickers? Or am i seeing it wrong.

Looking back, I would like to get one more on each side. I thought Iíd only have enough material for two on each side but I might have enough for another.

How far up into the body do you plan on cutting for the 2x6?

I was hoping to do boat-sides up to the bottom hinge but Iíll probably go up to the sill like you did. How much did you trim off the door?

Right on. IIRC about 1.5Ē. Basically up to where the door sheet metal widens up. The silver dots was the cut line. Any higher and the gap created after cutting the pinch seam between the two sheet metal pieces would get pretty close to the weatherstripping seal surface. My doors were also left on for the 2x6 replacement.

Thats what i was thinking. Mine is a 2door so a much larger hole to seal up. Did you seal the bottoms up after you cut them? I also have a second set of doors to make half doors with.

Live update: got the rear in the backyard and the top rack of the stand isnít quite tall enough for both housings to fit. Busted out the plasma and death wheel to get the 9Ē nakey nakey

As for the stand, Iíll have to chop it and make the top rack higher. Oh well

Re: The Black Pearl

take some square tube and flat plate and build a small stand for the lower axle mount vs raising the upper mount.

I think I see what you mean Casey. In the mean time, the wedges are off 44. Still got some grinding to do
