Will a 231 out of a wrangler with an ax15 fit behind my aw4? From what i can find on the net they are both 23 spline(i know the wrangler on is a 23 spline). I am looking to replace my 242 with a 231.

What year is your AW4? 1991-up are 23-sp, 1989 and earlier are 21-sp, but I'm not sure about 1990.

You should be fine. If the Wrangler is a YJ, you won't be able to swap input gears (they changed the helix angle sometime around 1996,) but if it's a TJ, you can swap them easily.
