hey i got a 5 speed, 3.07s, 4.0L on 32s. Im going to 33s. I dont mind my gears, theyre certainly liveable. I was just wondering about what gears you guys with 5 speeds are using and on what tire sizes and if you like it, dislike it, any suggestions? thanks~ (manuals only plz :)

33s and 4.88s wouldn't go back to stock if you paid me.

I have run 33's and 4.10's and also 33's and 4.88's. I thought the 4.10's were great on the highway but lacking around town and on the trail. Overall I thought it needed just a tad bit more gear. 4.88's are great around town and on the trail, but tedious on the highway and it hurts the highway gas mileage. I geared to 4.88's because I plan on 35's. I think 4.56's would be the ideal gear for a 5sp xj on 33's if it sees speeds above 65. Just my opinion.

I like this thread because I'm thinking the same things; pretty sure I'm also running in the 3s; but what axles are you running? Stock D35s or do y'all have the 8.5". I have a D35 in a '95 but can't afford different axles yet, so wanting to up my gears as well and not worry too much about breaking something on a trail.

P.S.; I'm just a casual trail junky. nothing too serious or bashing, mainly forest roads and hunting trails.

I ran 30's and 3.07's
30's and 3.55's
33's and 3.55's
33's and 5.13's
35's and 5.13's

with my ax-15...

I loved the 33's and 5.13's - overdrive was a real gear, no downshifting required to pass...

revved a little high, but it wasnt terrible, and I never took it above about 75mph (around 3700rpm)...

Wow, 4.88s were you even able to use 1st gear? Id think it would just leap forward haha. So you think for 33s I should get some 4.10s or 4.56s? Which would be best if fuel economy was my biggest concern?

i run a dana 30 up front
a 44 in the rear
both locked
with 4.10s
with 35s

it runs great on and off road
has NO trouble getitng up and moving on the highway
and on the trail the power is enough save any of my stuck buddies.
and yes the gas isnt great but i love my jeeps so i will pay to feed them both
but thats just me.

I got 32s and 5 speed went with 4.56s at 65mph its a lil above 2500 rpm. Im going to go with 33s soon, with 32s its a lil much on highway for my taste. Also got a aussie locker in the front, its great. And a detroit locker in the back, real loud with the 5 speed, would rather gone with a Ox locker

33s with 4.56 gears.

I ran from Chicago to Moab pulling a pop-up for 3 years, with 2 combos. 31s with 4.10s, and 33s with 4.10s. 33s and 4.10s just aren't quite enough, both on and off road. I haven't flogged the Heep since I got 4.56s, and I'd even consider deeper gears.

I've got a '98, 5spd, 32's with 4.56's.... I take a very small hit on gas mileage, but the pulling power is perfect. Good trade off...

If I want better gas mileage, I'll get an econobox...

31"s, and 3.55's have been working quite well both on and off road for the last 4-5 years, the Jeeps' engine runs about 2000 RPM on the interstate at 70-75 MPH and mileage is around 22-23 per gallon.

I run 4.56 with 35s in my 5 speed. Seems great to me, i can still run 80-85mph in Atlanta traffic 16 to 18 mpg mixed.

I run 4.30's (D44s) with my AX-15 and 33s -- I wouldn't want to be any taller, even with a stroker.

4.88s is fine on the freeway as long as your top speed is under 65, I run 60 on the dot most of the time and get great gas milage for having 33s. I still get about 18mpg if I keep it between 55 and 60.

Ive also run
235/75/15s on 3.07 meh whatever stock
32s on 3.07 didn't relize how much it sucked till I got 4.10s but it sucked
32s on 4.10 awesome
33s on 3.55 sucked
33s on 4.10 ok (wished I has 4.56 or 4.88)

currently
33s on 4.88

31's and 4.10s. Re-gear. You'll get better power and MPG.

I ran 31's with 3.07's with my AX-15 and loved it as a daily driver, but it was definetly a little tall when offroad, and didnt like the freeway hills all that much. I now run 35's with 4.88's so much better offroad and more power on the freeway, however it was much quicker around town with the old setup.

31's and 4.10 was great. I now have moved up to 33's. I will be going to 4.88's cause 35's are in the future.. Try to look ahead or your going to be spending cash a lot quicker and more often. As far as breakage I just twisted a 35 axle shaft with a lock rite. I was in it hard when it happen. The joy's of Jeep.
Good luck!!

P.S. Just got a 1975 dana 44 now going full width!!
