they are almost the same width, I got my 9 out of a 67 ford f100 and I think it was within half an inch of the same width. The broncos should be the same width as a f100

The nine inch is stronger out of the box but more important is it's probibly the most popular rear for huge horsepower cars so there is a ton of aftermarket parts, gears, lockers, etc, that will make it bulletproof.

The Early Bronco axles are about 1 1/2" narrower, the rear axles perches DO NOT line up, but this is easily fixed, and the rear is a 28 spline. The 31 spline started in '78 models, which are also F-series based. I have this set-up under an '88 XJ, using the 9" drum brakes, and (ugh) 1.3" wheelspacer/adapters on it.
