When I built my old rear bumper, I welded some JCR D-ring tabs to it using a stick, then went over it with a MIG. I also V-grooved the tabs at the mounting surface.

Here is a diagram for some HD front mounting points. Add what you need for a custom bumper or tow hooks. Welding tow points to the unibody is not recommended.
