Larger gas tank

Has anyone tried swapping in a 23+ gal. gas tank from a Comanche into a Cherokee with a 20gal. tank?
I know the bigger tank uses 3 different style straps as opposed to the 2 straps for the Cherokee tank.
Wondering if the fill/vent hook up to the rubber hoses would be "almost" in the correct place and just need different hoses to make it work.
 
Not sure how that would work as the MJ tank is mounted in front of the rear axle, in line with the frame on the driver's side. Like most full size trucks do. It looks too long to be mounted in an XJ.
 
From what info I have found so far:

The 20gal. XJ tank measurements are: 33-5/8" X 20¾" X 13"

The 23.5gal. tank measurements are: 36½" X 17¼" X 13-5/8"

The fuel pump/sending unit are on the same panel of the tank, but the one one the XJ is closer to the drivers side whereas the one on the 23.5gal. tank is closer to the opposite side.
Will have to take some measurements when the weather gets better.....

Not gonna happen. The MJ tank is setup to be front to back, the XJ tank is setup for side to side. the MJ is too tall and the sending unit is on the side. It absolutely will not fit in the XJ.
 
Is it worth the groundclearance loss?? Not to me!

You could get that bigger one, cut a hole in the floor so that it sticks up into the cargo area a bit, and have it at about stock height.

My question is does anyone have measurements or has anyone used a ZJ gas tank and can the ZJ tanks capacity be increased like the XJ one in the linked article on go-jeeps site? 30 gallons would be ideal but paying $500 for a large tank is crazy and I could buy 2 gerry cans for much less
