90 XJ brake system

Has anyone swapped out a 90 XJ brake system to something more modern?

My brake system is going to shit & the pump is running all the time now. Yes, the fluid is full...

One of those "I woke up this morning" things.

I'd like to rip out the entire POS system and go with something else. I do not care about ABS either...

Yes a lot of people upgrade, do a search.
You can put in a booster for a 95-96 jeep with little to no modification, other years are a little tuffer.
You can put on rear disks from ZJ's also.

Since he mentioned a pump running, it's obvious that he has one of the dreaded Bendix ABS systems. It'll take a bit more than just swapping the power booster to fix it.

The solution is not to get something more modern, but to get something LESS modern -- plain old non-ABS power brakes. Bones did an excellent write-up on replacing your system with conventional brakes quite some while ago. Maybe someone has a link to it.

I was saying to get a newer booster w/o the abs. Dual diaphram. Get rid of the abs entirely. The madxj.com tech section has a writeup.

I just read an article on MADXJ but they were using a 89 XJ. My 90 looked different than the 89 pics they were showing... I hate that pump over on the passenger-side fenderwell. And an ABS box under the rear seat.

So if I can swap out the brake system from a 96 XJ, can I get rid of all that stuff?

Anyone done this to a Bendix XJ before? Is 90 the only year XJ to have a Bendix?

Thanks!

I beleive the 89 an 90 systems are the same. The reason yours looks different is of course b/c of the ABS. You should be able to pull your abs motor, and booster and put in a non abs dual diaghram booster. You will have to pull the fuse/ relay to deactivate the abs.

I have never done this but I have read quite a bit about it, find someone with personal experience. I have an 89 w/o abs so I am not in the same situation you are in.

Good luck.

If you are talking about removing the abs crap and running standard brakes its not too tough to do, the master cylinder of couorse needs to change out along with the abs brain and pump. loose all the junk lines in the engine bay and pick up the needed lines etc from teh junk yard.

I have a 90 xj with the dreaded ABS. I removed it all and put in a double diaphram booster and m/c from a Grand Cherokee. Fairly easy swap but I can't seem to get all the air out of the system. I've tried vacuum bleeding, conventional bleeding, and conventional bleeding with the engine running. I've bench bled the m/c. I've got a firm pedal when the engine is off, but when I start the engine, the pedal goes to the floor when I press it. I'm using the proportioning valve that was used with the ABS system. I used the prop valve from the grand at first, but it didn't help. Any thoughts?
