NP242 in place of a 231?

Guys,
Im told a 242 will bolt right up in place of a current 231 in a 92 XJ. Is this true? Also, will any year work, or must it be from a 91 up?

As long as the spline count and input shaft length are the same, they're a direct swap. I believe the input shaft lengths between autos and manuals are different. I just swapped my 242 for an 231, and it was as simple as pulling the old one out and putting the new one in.

If the input shaft doesn't match you can swap the input shaft of the 231 to the 242, they interchange also.
