Tranny Questions

I have an 85 Laredo 4X4. My tranny is acting really stupid, and needs to either be replaced or rebuilt. There are metal shavings in the tranny pan, and it's slipping on pretty much all the gears when it's cold. When it's warmed up, it only slips on 3rd. Anyways, my questions is:
1) would it be worth rebuilding this tranny, or should I just trash it for a new one (cost wise & longevity)
2) If I should trash it, what tranny is compatible
3) What tranny do I have anyways?

Your tranny is a Chrysler tranny. 904 I think, but I'm not certain of that.

I think your best solution would be to find a newer tranny out of a mid- to late 90s Wrangler 4-cyl. The AW-4 from a 4.0L (6-cyl) XJ won't bolt up to your engine, so that's not an option.
