how to replace serpentine belt

My idler pulley self destructed, so I got a replacement and put it on.

Now I have to put the serpetine belt back on the power steering pulley.

How do I do this.

Is there a website with pictures. I have both Haynes and Chiltons but its not really clear how to move the pulley enough to put the belt on and then
tension the belt..

What year is your XJ? It makes a difference, as they changed the belt tensioning methods over the years.

My xj is 90 6 cyl in line engine lorado

Look at your power steering pump, loosen the pivot bolt, and the bolt in the slotted holes, then below the pump there is a bolt mounted parallel with the pulley, as you loosen that bolt the PS pump will move towrd the engine and allow you to place the belt on. When done, just retighten that bolt and the PS pump will move outwards and you can adjust tension. Don't forget to tighten all the other bolts and your done.

if it's like the newer models, there's two bolts to loosen on the back of the pump too, I think.

Problem solved. Thanks for all your help.

I had to guess at how tight to make the belt. Any better way without special tools.
