Interchangeable?

Does anyone know if an axle from a 99 cherokee will work on my 96?

I'm sure there's a post somewhere here that will answer that question but I can't find it. Sorry

It will, but know that the 96's 8.25(non-abs) axle has 27-splines shafts vs the 97+s 29-splines.

Front or rear axle?

Front is no different

Rear 8.25 would be considered an upgrade from 27 to 29 spline.
Rear D35 would be the same.

Just make sure your gears match whichever axle you're using.

6 cyl automatics were 3.55
6 cyl manuals were 3.07
4 cyl were generally 4.10
