How do I count or identify a 231 23 spline? Lookin at Buying one just wondering

There is a red & silver tag on the case. Should say 231 J.
If it is >91 it's a 23 spline <90 a 21 spline.
Mark a spot on one of the spline/gears and count them all the way around.

87-90 = 21 spline. 91+ = 23. 90 is the only year in question really. mine is 21 spline

ParadiseXJ, Do you mean if it's a 6cyl it's probably 23 and if its a 4cyl its probably 21 spline??
And like was said, mark 1 spline and count around the shaft to either 21 or 23.

No It is based on year. 87-90 (renix) are 21-spline, 91+ (HO) is 23-spline. Doesn't matter what engine or t-case.

No, I said COUNT the splines, I don't believe I mentioned anything about cylinders. So just to be clear, mark one of the splines with chalk or paint etc. Then COUNT from that one all the way til you get back to the mark.
If you get 22 or 24...you did something wrong. Don't bother counting cylinders!!!??
90 and below = 21
91 and up= 23
What year is the donor??
