Are you putting it into a 95 or 96 XJ?
A 95 XJ will want a temp sensor on the back of the head, the 96 head won't have the hole for it there.
A 96 XJ won't care if you run a 95 block under the proper head.

97 is the changeover to the single CTS; 96 should still have the port in the head, IINM.

That depends on the 96 really being a changeover year, but you'll find most of them are single sensor. Or rather, most if not all of the ones I have touched are single sensor.

Fair enough; the only 96 I've fooled with uses two sensors. Either way, relocating the sending unit for the gauge is a simple task if needed.

You can only do this if you install a stroker block!
