im building a rear 44 out of an xj and a guy at work has a set of new "thick" 4.88's. will these work in my housing? whats the deal with "thick gear sets? thanks
What ratio do you presently have in the axle? This will determine if you can use a thick gear set. Thick gears are used on the numericaly lower carriers instead of replacing the carrier with one for numericaly higher gears.
You can use the thick gears on the carrier you have now. Make sure the gear set he has was made for you application. Get a part number from him and do some research.
so let me make sure i understand this correctly...
first, where is the carrier break on the XJ44?
using the numerically lower carrier (in this case, the 44 came with 3.55s from the factory, as will mine) you can get away with not replacing the carrier by using "thick cut" gears?
also, a lunchbox locker like an aussie or a powertrax isnt carrier specific is it?
