d30 gear swap

I got a 90xj with a d30 up front with a aussie locker and 4.56s. It is a vac disco housing. Im picking up another d30 non disco housing. To change the gears and locker over to the non disco housing, how much work am I looking at, and would I need any special tools? Or bite the bullet and have it done?

the process would involve shimming, setting the preload, checking to see if the wear pattern is correct, and other precision oriented stuff. might as well have a professional do it.

why get ride of the dysco housing they are stronger the have cast upper control arm mounts just do a inner seal and get a long shaft the stamped mounts bend if they feel the need

while the disco housing may be a little stronger, its the actual disco system that fails, which is probably why he wants to switch to the reliable non disco axle.

I under stand that but we put a long shaft out of my old 30 into friends 91 tj dysco for a trail fix and no problems

oh i see what you mean. yea that would be a lot easier than swapping gears from one axle to another.

Yeah 10 min to put the seal in and you keep the ridged 30

They said that the vac housings look stronger, but they fail more often with the tubs ripping out and harder to truss

oh well in that case then stick with your original plan. i would still recommend paying a professional to do the swap.

It's really not that difficult. I've done it several times.

All you need is a little mechanical ability and a place to work.

oh, and an inch lb torch wrench, dial indicator and other hand tools.
It really just depends on how much you want to learn and how much 300 bucks means to you. Personally, I prefer do it myself and learn. Just remember you have all the backup you need on here...
