simple answer: no.
hard answer: no, unless you want to do some work. The 98 and later have an input speed sensor while the 97 and earlier do not, and the 98 and later have an output speed sensor that gives 4 pulses per revolution via magnetic pickup while the 97 and earlier have an output speed sensor that gives 1 pulse per revolution via reed switch. You can switch over the output speed sensor or build a circuit that will convert the signal (would be much more difficult making a 97-down sensor feed a 98-up TCU, you would have to build a PLL based frequency multiplier and probably a pulse shaper as well, and it would not work at low speeds) but you will have to machine out the mounting boss for the input speed sensor and perhaps install the rotor that drives the sensor which would involve disassembling the transmission. Get a 98-up transmission unless you're looking for a project.
Also, in the future, please give required info beforehand... we had no idea what type of transmission you were looking to swap in, and even after a few posts didn't have that. Much easier if you specify it all in the first post.
