Sliders to replace the rockers

The XJ I got recently has pretty rotted rockers, so I was thinking about cutting them out and replacing them with 2x4 tubing. Ive seen a few pics of this done, but not much more than that.

Asking those who have done this, or know more than me, did you use any mounts to the frame? It seems difficult since the rockers are above the frame, and supports would have to be bent down to reach. IIm basically asking if its enough just to weld the sliders along the edges of the rocker? Pics would help alot too.

Thanks :patriot:

Edit: Something similar to this

goodburbon beat me to it. It's been done quite a bit. Several write ups if you can't figure it out on your own.

There are several ways to do it, some people (like myself) run supports down to the uni-rail. I'm skinning the supports with some UHMW so I shouldn't get hung up on them, otherwise you're just creating clearance issues.
Others get away with supporting them underneath the pillars.

Most definitely NOT!

Quick pictures of mine in progress below. I used 2x6x0.250"wall for the rocker itself and the front and rearmost legs are 2x2x0.250"wall with 2x2x0.188"wall for the middle four.

Im sure there is a way to do it but has anyone done replacement rocker w/o having to trim their doors? I mean, if your not afraid to chop your rockers you shouldnt be afraid of chopping the doors but Im not sure I have ever seen it done that way?

yah, tons of us. most that have posted on this thread did not need to trim the doors. did you not look at the pics or the links?

I have seen the pictures and links posted but it looked to me like most except whitexj98's have the bottoms of the doors trimmed up. Reno's are trimmed, starboard's are more than trimmed haha, hard to tell but RCman's look like there is door trimming involved and the xj in the first post looks trimmed. I could be wrong but most in these links and pictures look like door trimming is involved.

WOW!! look here! pictures of rocker replacement without cutting the doors and even a write up.

yes, it is possible to do rocker replacment without needing to cut the doors. when you cut just cut the rocker a little below the door. account for the gap between the "step plate" in the door jam and the top of the rocker tube with some spacers. i searched before i did mine and i came up with a lot of information. see:

My friend did his w/o trimming the doors, but I would recommend just going up as high as possible and hacking the doors. :)
