np231 Vacuum Switch question

Okay so I gotta np231 out of a 2001 XJ that im putting in my 99 that had a 242. the vacuum switches are different and I was wondering what exactly the vacuum switch does? does it only light up the dash?
 
Yep, that's all it dose.
I have an 88 with a 231 and I cut out all (and I mean all) vacuum lines.
If I unplugged it and the jeep still ran it got cut out.

Vac lines from t case work light!
