Which newer AW4 trannys will work with 1987?

I have one from 1993 in mine, so it will work electronically. However, at some point the spline count of the shaft that mounts to the TC changed, which was not a problem for me as I used the 93 TC as well. You will need to find out the year of the change in order to get a "direct" swap in. What is wrong with your AW4? My first one worked fine at 211k miles, and my "new" one works fine with about 225k, so I am convinced that they do not wear out.

I had it rebuilt just before I turned 200k, cut to 7-ish years later (last Tuesday) with 280k and she started making an odd gravely noise in gear. I made it home and replaced the fluid only to have her start slipping. I paid $2200 to have it rebuilt (by a reputable shop too) and don't want to spend another huge stack to cash to get back on the road, so I was going to price some lower mileage AW4's at local pick-n-pulls this weekend. In searching I did find that the 21-spline outputs ran from 87-89, and 23-spline from 90-01, so I may have to try and find a good AW4 with a NP242. Thanks for your input. Shane

On the slipping, make sure you used Dexron3. Using ATF4+ or some synthetics can cause slipping. Note that ATF4+ is for Chrysler trannies, but the AW4 is not a Chrysler made tranny.

As noted above the spline count changed, so you'd have to swap the xfer case as well to use newer. Avoid going newer than 97 as there was a change in the rear output speed sensor and it will not work with your 87 trans computer. Here are a few posts discussing the sensor swap. Its easier to avoid the problem up front if possible.
