Though I know there are other drives that are fine, I will only buy Maxtor now. To me it's worth the little bit of extra - knowing I won't have to replace it. In 10 years of I think I've only seen a few Maxtors die before they were taken out of service.
Hubs, you gotta love em.
I've done the freezer method with success one time - I couldn't boot to it but could see it as a secondary drive from windows and copied data off of it.
I'll remember the oven trick and try it next time. I figured the plastic components would be unhappy with the oven.
Now that all of the IBM...
I haven't read through this entire thread but saw the original post.
I'd tell your buddy to grow a f-ing pair and grow up. Ford vs. Chev, Square vs. Round headlights, Japanese vs. American - it's all bullshit from people blowing their own horn because no one else will.

I was leaning toward the one at parts america.
Since all models I've seen that have a larger motor or tank are basically double the price, I think I'll stay with this one and deal with the low duty cycle when I use a die grinder.
If I decide to get another one later, I'm sure I can get most of...

I planned on waiting until I lifted it to do this - everything is easier when it's up in the air - but too much oil was running out onto the garage floor.
I have no doubt an upcountry package would allow removal of the pan with everything bolted up, but not on an everyday stock XJ.
If the shocks are limiting the drop, that would be great. I might even be able to get it out with 1" more axle drop, though 2" would be even better.
I'll try that.
Thanks!
I've read on here that the oil pan can be removed even if you have stock suspension. This may be the case on other XJ's (suspect Up Country package) but not on my stock 90. Even if you could pry/force it out, you'd ruin the new gasket when trying to put it back in.
I have jack stands on the...
Here's the solution. I missed 2 important steps:
1. Reinstall 5/8 bolt that goes through trans housing into starter
2. Clean off baked on grease gunk crap from bolt just below it that looks like cast iron
3. Remove the correct bolt which is 15mm
Finally got the oil pan loose to change a rear main seal, but can't get it out because the starter is in the way (I don't want to remove the exhaust)
I removed 2 bolts that are holding the starter in place.
The lower is a 9/16 from the starter side into the trans housing
The upper is a 5/8...
I have changed to synthetic at the following mileages with the listed results. Always Mobile1 Full Synth.
