You do not have to take the doors off but you do have to take off the inner door panel. That is not too tough, a couple of screws and those plastic snappy things. Are you talking about electric door locks or mechanical? K

Only the renix xj's had the knock sensor which is 90-87 maybe a bit older. Your 93 is OBD1 while a 97 will be OBD2, I cannot give you more info then that b/c I have a renix. K

That is not a bad thought but the noise would happen when you come to a stop not when you let go of the brake. It could be something really goofy like shocks or ebrake cables. It just does not sound brake related. K
