    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

Yes, it passed smog a few days ago (you can see the stats on that in my post above - it was close) and continues to operate within spec according to the REM. My high NOx content being related to the newer model is still up in the air, but somewhat unlikely in my opinion. If the sensor was...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

Right. I had the head hot-tanked and rebuilt ~5yrs ago and have done a few seafoams since then so it should be pretty clean. The cat is only about 4yrs old, and tempwise she reliably runs about 195-210 degrees according to the REM. Good thought - I re-torqued them once a few years ago after I...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

California SMOG update for the metallic Bosch 12009 vs. older ceramic Walker 250-23501. I drove it for two weeks on the Bosch, watching my renix engine monitor the whole time. It consistently went to closed loop within 20 seconds of engine start (often less), and stayed so the rest of any...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

I put in the metallic Bosch 12009 this evening. First off I compared them and noted that it had a much smaller threaded portion than the ceramic Walker (by nearly half) - however when you line up the shoulders/crush washers the small sniffer ports in the heads are in the same location relative...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

This was the sneaking suspicion I had, thank you for putting it into words. It just seems odd that suddenly it's very difficult to get the ceramic sensors - whether or not that's by updated/cheaper designs or database/AI error is the question. The Walker catalogue I linked above shows what...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

I was especially confused since I tried two brand-new NTK/NGK and neither of them would go closed-loop two years ago when I tried them. 1988 4.0/AW4 for the record, and I've done every single Cruiser54 tip on the dang thing. I'll throw in this metallic/solid Bosch 12009 I just got, and see if...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

Yeah the current ceramic Walker is working properly - all the readings on your REM are correct and my mileage is good/as expected with my modifications. At this point I'm planning on doing my smog check as-is since everything is untouched since my last Pass. That's all fine and good. I guess...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

Question for the Renix guys: Two years ago I bought one of Nick's excellent REM units prior to a California smog check, and determined I was stuck in open loop. I was running a NTK 23553 o2 sensor at the time, and I ordered a new one and installed to find the same result. As a test, I swapped...

Tire recommendations for SoCal desert and/or Baja

I've done a lot of Mojave mine road exploring on my Cooper Discoverer STT Maxx 31"s, and they're holding up very well. Yeah, there are sharp rocks to be sure, as well as volcanic terrain. I usually air 'em down to 15psi, and I barely even have to enable 4hi for sand... its kinda boring :roll...

    Renix map vacuum question

Not sure the answer to your diameter/vac question, but I had a similar problem and the cheapo generic rubber lines from the auto store kept melting or breaking right over the exhaust manifold shield. I finally went and found a little length of aluminum tube at the hardware or hobby store, and it...

    Renix crank no start

It's kind of a pain to get at, but you should check to see if your ignition switch is burnt out. When I had a crank/no start with fuel and spark condition, that's what it ended up being. It's midway down the steering column, up underneath the dash.

1990 Renix SMOG, CA problem with running Rich/Lean

Congratulations!! That's a great feeling. Nice numbers!

1990 Renix SMOG, CA problem with running Rich/Lean

1 - I also run 746 injectors that I rebuilt myself; they pass LA County dyno test w/flying colors. I have a 1988 with a 89-90 ECU. 4 - 4wd? Do you have a vac-disconnect Dana30? Those brittle axle vac lines could all be shattered causing some leak. 5 - As long as you gave it a good cleaning...

1990 Renix SMOG, CA problem with running Rich/Lean

Definitely. That makes reading your 02 sensor pretty dang easy, I love mine. Sounds like you're getting your sensor issues straightened out. As a side thought, check your fuel injector plugs to make sure they're going to the correct cylinders. It is possible to cross the pairs. One or two of...

Fitting a 31" spare in stock location

Yeah, I do the same thing - that will get it out of the way of the liftgate. I used a longer eye-bolt in place of the stock rod. I've left the rear seat down since the day I bought the Jeep, but a 31" will interfere if you want the seat raised. You can slightly relocate the rear seat catches to...

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

Fuel trims were OK in the beginning, but slowly started to creep high. As it failed, I noted it would open/close on cold but eventually just stuck open.

    Testing Jeep O2, Oxygen sensors

My 1988 ate a brand-new NTK 23553 sensor in the ~7 months since I had last passed smog. Voltage just stopped fluctuating and it stayed open loop. It was one of those light-gold colored, bullet looking three-wires. Not sure why, my emissions numbers were very good last test (it was installed for...

200,000 mile brake system refresh. Thoughts?

Doh, yeah I meant KJ/Liberty. And it's weird, but I I've started seeing as many if not more KJs than XJs in my local yard inventory. Tons and tons of ZJ/WJs.

200,000 mile brake system refresh. Thoughts?

Lots of good thoughts and advice! I thought I explained it in the original post, but I really am not looking to do a rear WJ conversion - it seemed, in my (internet) research, that properly adjusted brake drums are basically equal to discs in rear stopping force, unless you're running track with...

200,000 mile brake system refresh. Thoughts?

I have a 1988 XJ with the stock, vac-disconnect D30 in front and a 29spline 8.25 out of a 2001 XJ in the rear. The 8.25 blew a wheel cylinder running a trail last week, and since I'm at 199,950 miles (~115,000 on the 8.25) I think it's time for a long-neglected brake system refresh. The brakes...
