felpro ex/in gasket faces which way?

Replacing exhaust/intake manifold gasket on '89 4.0 xj. The metal port rings on the gasket are flat on one side and rounded on the otherside. Does it matter which side faces the manifold and which faces the head? I had just replaced the gasket and it blew out after a few hundred miles. Want to...

ex leak, mnfold gasket migrated out @#6 exh

Just replaced exhaust manifold on '89 xj, 4.o, auto, w/ 235k miles. Original manifold cracked at the usual place for these motors. Anyways after a couple of hundred miles after replacement, the #6 exhaust port portion of gasket migrated out toward the firewall. You can see the metal ring part of...

Tired of trying to find the egr tube that I cracked while replacing my cracked manifold. Any problems you guys can see if I just head to Home Depot and get some 5/8 copper pipe, and then bend and flare it to OEM form. What happens to copper after prolonged exhaust exposure. The seal between the...

    tranny mount

No, the mount is not broke. But is the mount suppose to be bolted to the trans or does the trans just rest on it. I know the mount bolts to the crossmember on the bottom (4 bolts), but what about at the top.

    tranny mount

'89 250k auto np 231- problem with tc linkage, keeps popping out of pivot in tunnel well. Does tranny mount bolt to tran or just crossmember? Tranny mount bolts to crossmember are tight, but with all that oil and sludge not sure it there were two bolts holding mount to botton of trans. I think...

    transfer case shifter-linkage popping out

Stock '89 4.0 aw4 229K np231. My transfer case linkage keeps popping out of its pivot under the tunnel well. The shifter shaft pops out of the brass pivot cradled opposite the TC. This is happening during city driving! The pivot looks good, there is a little rattle as many experience, where is...

new (Quadratec) tie rod ends popping

I think the taper on the tre (steering link to pitman arm) was a little thin, and the threads ran out before it could get a good seat. Will replace and see what happens.

new (Quadratec) tie rod ends popping

Just replaced 3 tie rod ends on stock '89 xj and immediately getting popping sounds up front. Torqued to spec, did search. Are these things suppose to break in. Anybody else have problems with Quadratec tie rod ends. They pop when moving and turning left to right, and vice versa. Don't sound...

torque frnt hub with axle loaded or not?

Getting ready to replace front hub assembly on my '89. Axle nut is to be torqued to 175 ft/lbs, but is that with it weighted on the ground or suspended on an axle stand. Not sure if it matters, but it seems to when torquing wheel lug nuts.

engine knock caused by failing alternator

At idle and off throttle while driving, a failing alternator bearing was producing a very noticeable knock. Sometimes it sounded more like a rattle. But it never squealed. Alternator replaced. Now I can actually hear a slight rod knock and sticking lifter. On to the next project.

Bay Area XJ'rs, lend me your ears

Tranny mount replaced about 40k ago. Sound comes much forward of that, from engine itself.

Bay Area XJ'rs, lend me your ears

Have searched the forums, done the troubleshooting (knocks while engine loaded or not, and immediately upon start up to operating temp-rod knock and flexplate ruled out) and still not sure what is causing the knocking sound on my 89 xj. Broomstick technique inconclusive. It's getting louder and...

    Pitman arm ain't moving.

Torch to the pitman arm, tapping end of the puller bolt and torquing down the puller bolt eventually got it off. thanks for all input, it did the trick. Oh yeah, also got the biggest scare of my shade tree mechanic career, that thing shot off with a bang. Good thing I kept the nut on.

    Pitman arm ain't moving.

Replacing steering box. I'm using a heavy duty puller to pull the pitman arm off, but the arm is stuborn. Each time I can tell I'm stressing the theads on the puller but the arm doesn't move. What tricks might work. Does it matter if Jeep is on ground or not. I wouldn't think so. '89 205k miles...

    Front brakes pulling right?

I've replaced the left caliper and flexible brake line, but Jeep still wants to pull to right under braking. It's not suspension or tire related, brake dust pilling up faster on right front wheel than left. More pad material remains on left caliper than right. What's causing loss of pressure to...

East Bay XJ'er lend me your ear, sound diagnosis

I live in Pleasant Hill and am trying to diagnose a sound from front of engine. Flywheel is torqued down, I'm not sure what piston slap or rod knock sounds like. I think its the timing chain slapping the housing but would like second and third opinions. It's been doing it as long as I've had the...
