Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

It's interesting you mention the bent axle because the wheel was actually wobbling side to side like it's out of true instead of hopping because its out of balance.

Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

The guy running the dyno was busy trying to get my car to pass smog. I compared it with the wheel and tire on the other side and it was visibly different. As I mentioned in one of the initial posts, the tires are almost down to the wear bars, and need to be replaced. Firestone wouldn't...

Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

I took the Jeep to get the smog inspection done. I was watching one of the back wheels on the dyno, and you could tell by looking at it that it was out of balance. I'm hoping that some new tires will help.

Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

Hi, The steering stabilizer was the first thing I replaced, before the track bar, tie rod ends and hubs. I just had the tires rotated and balanced as well. The tires are old though, almost down to the wear bars

Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

Hi, I've been trying to deal with death wobble in a stock 98 XJ for about a year. I replaced all of the front end components and had it aligned, and it would still start wobbling at about 65mph after hitting a bump. I was pulling my hair out until one day I felt the back end shake, before the...

    Check gauges light again

Update. I went to remove the alternator, and realized that the 2 nuts holding the field and PCM connector were missing. Because it was almost off anyway I took it into the shop and had it checked. It was putting out 100 Amps. Charged the battery overnight and it was at 12.9V at rest. Put it...

    Check gauges light again

Hi Vehicle is a 98 XJ LTD, 4.0, AT, Dana 30 I've been having ongoing issues with charging, and holding a charge. The check gauges light was coming on and the volt meter was dropping to zero, both intermittently. I replaced the battery, then had the alternator rebuilt from a quality local...

    Thanks everybody

Hi, So I finally got my daughters 98 XJ smogged and running great, and wanted to say thanks to all who've posted threads about their work. Being able to come here for information has been great. I doubt I could find all of the posts that I've read recently, but they've all been useful, and I...

    Another failed California smog candidate

Thanks for the info about the smaller tires. Thats time I won't waste. I'm going to run some fuel system cleaner through the tank, and see what happens. I'm also going to see if I have any exhaust system leaks as suggested by the previous poster. Since I just put a muffler and a header on it...

    Another failed California smog candidate

Thanks everybody for the help. So to answer some questions, I believe the O2 sensors were both replaced when I did the major tune. It has 160K now. One thing that I couldn't chase down was a stumble at idle. It never idled very smooth, and It always sounded like it was running rich at idle...

    Another failed California smog candidate

Thanks guys. The gearing is stock, and the tires are 235/70-15, which are actually a little smaller diameter than the stock 225/75's. I'll try the seafoam. I've also thought about seafoaming it through the intake, to see it that can burn off the tops of the pistons

    Another failed California smog candidate

Hi I'm new to the forum, and need some help. My Daughters XJ failed smog on high NOx on the low speed test, and I'm looking for some possibilities other than a factory Cat. The other emission reading look really good, and so it makes me curious as to the problem. Vehicle is a 98 XJ, 4.0l...
