I've owed a many of XJ and have seen it to be a common problem for the torque converter bolts to back them selves from the flywheel causing the XJ to sometimes knock the stop or get worse at high rpms. This might've happened to you
You could try removing the engine mounts and shake the motor slightly side to side to free torque converter. I believe every one with an auto dreads this task. I've pulled two aw4 with 231s on them, before I realized it was easier to just remove front end and pull both at the same time.
