I have an 89 xj 4.0 and it quit running a few months ago, I replaced the fuel pump and it still will not start, I checked the voltage at the pump connector and it was around 10-11 after you turn the key on and did not change when cranking, I checked the voltage at the ballast resistor and...
It actually has both, sometimes it will start and die as soon as I let off of the starter, other times it does not want to start. I have bypassed the ballast resistor. Any ideas?
What are the 3 wires going to the fuel Pump? Ground, Fuel pump power, Sending unit? I checked voltage on between outside two wires with key on and it is 10.?? is that correct? I cant get it running and just put in a new pump from Autozone.
I have the wires that are suppose to be connected to the ballast resistor hooked togerther bypassing the resistor and that has not solved my problem. In that case do you think that the computer is the problem? Any guess on cost of replacement computer?
Thanks
Chris
What is the black contraption mounted to the drivers inner fender behind the ballast resistor and in front of the washer tank? Mine is making my relay (second from front) make a buzzing sound when the key is on in the run position. It quits if I unplug it? I am trying to get my 89 XJ 4.0...
I Was Trying To Figure Out Why My 89 Xj Will Not Start And Was Running A Jumper From The Battery To The Wires Connected To The Ballast Resistor And Got It Started And Then The Orange Fuseable Link Connected To The Top Spade Terminal Melted And Smoked! Any Ideas On Why That Would Happen?
Thanks...
I have been trying to get my 89 XJ 4.0 to start, It will run if I take jumper cables from the positive side of the battery and clamp it to the two fuel pump wires on the drivers fender at the ballast resistor (Just bypassing resistor dosent work). The second relay from the front of the 4 behind...
I have an 89 XJ and it was not running so I replaced the fuel pump and now it will start and run for about 5-10 seconds and then die, I tried switching around the relays and jumping the resistor but nothing seems to work. Also the relay that is second from the front is ticking/buzzing what is...
I had a similar problem and found that the main power wire going to the fuse panel on the engine side of the firewall corroded off, I soldered it and it works fine.
I have a 89 XJ and it set for about a week and when I went to start it started hard and was backfiring when I tried to drive it, it acted like it didnt have any power. A week or so later I went to start it and it would not start and the fuel pump sounded bad (Grinding type sound). Last night I...
I recently purchased a 89 XJ and it has an auto-reset 10 amp circut breaker in the Park light fuse slot, when I turn on the park lights they flash like hazards as the breaker turns on and shuts off. Any certain place these get a short or something that would cause this?
It's fixed, the main red 10 guage wire (Battery power source to ignition) was corroded off where it enters the fuse panel from the engine compartment side.
Thanks
I bought an 89 XJ yesterday not running, the tilt was loose and I fixed that and it starts and runs now. The voltage guage is moving from 9-13 and if I turn on the a/c, put trans in reverse (all other gears it stays running), or push the power windows/locks it shuts off like the ignition has...
There are 4 bolts that hold the column at the pivot point, I tore mine apart last night and tightened them and it works like new now. There are several parts that come out so you must pay close attention so you can put them back. I ended up tearing mine apart about 3 times before I got them all...
