    '98 XJ on 33s

I regeared to 4.56 for 285 (33"). Gas mileage still sucks, but acceleration is fine. Regearing is expensive. Depending on our off-road vs. on- road use, I would recommend reducing tire size to 31" and eliminate regearing and cutting.

    Mud Terrain or All Terrain

AT's are great if you never drive them in mud, wet snow or ice. They never clear themselves and become slicks. Removed them and replace with Coopers on my XJ and Toyos on my truck. MT's might be better, can't speak from experience.

What is needed for a lift?

Searching would reveal many answers. However, i do not know if you can do an advanced search without being a NAXJA member. The first question is why lift? What is your purpose for the vehicle? What tire size? Because lifting cause many other necessairy modifications, e.g.; steering...

    What lift for 31" tires?

I would not go larger than 31s"; it can be done on stock gearing and wheels. I would, and did, invest in OME springs and then determine if you need a SYE to maintain a vibration free rear. Call Dirk at OPG (search it), he is of great counsel and also sells sh--. You want a factory-LIKE RIDE...

help properly re-doing my rear 4.5 lift

Have a telephone conversation with Dirk at DPG Off Road (you can find them on the web or a search on this site). There are several questions to address, e.g.; how high, SYE?, degree wedges? length of brake lines, front springs, bump stops, what size tires? If you change tire size, what about...

    new leaf springs or shackles

I have OME rear leafs w/additional leaf. I have raised the whole vehicle 4-4.5 inches, trimmed rear fenders and have installed 33" (285x 17) tires. Started a couple years ago as level; not heavy wheeling. I now have insufficient wheel well clearance; sagging over time. I have full steel rear...

    Relocating Rear Shock Mounts

~4 inch lift w/33s. Installed new rear D44. Used JKS shock mount tabs. Welded to lower edge of tube. Had to change shocks back to regular OME instead of extra-long. Everything else stayed the same. Ride is same. Improves ground clearance.

Cracked Exhaust Manifold.. Which header or just OEM replacement?

RE: new Banks header. FYI - Talked with Banks directly, there is a new header which differs from the original. The original cracked and had to be replaced under warranty too many times. The new header only has a 5-year warranty.

Backspacing on 16x8 wheels and 33x11 tires?

285x17 on 8' rims with 4"BS, 4-4.5 lift and trimed. I also have hub kit and it makes the front track wider and stick out more than rear. but, that is OK because you have more fender clearence in the front. You will have to search for wheels with 4-4.5 BS. Why 17's? Becuase it gives the same...

    33 X 9.5 x 15 BF Goodrich (Good bad or in different?)

First - BFGs ATs are terrible in mud - fill-up and spin. Good on pavement, OK on snow, not ice. Just took them off. Second - a 33" tire, just went to a 285-70, needs 4" lift and trimming, and a wheel with 4" of backspacing. I also regeared to 4.56. If I was to go back and just wanted a street...

Chains - front or back wheels

I am burried and have one set of chains that fit my new larger tires. So, my questions is: Is it better to chain the front or back wheels? I have ARB lockers.

    Banks headers, worth the coin?

If you search Banks or headers, you will find a whole lot of very unhappy Banks owners (cracks). I have no personal experience with the header, but the Banks programmer, which I was so stupid to beleive the hype, makes no improvements in performance or fuel.

    Arb compressor

The new ARB has small tanks and is high effency. I do not run additional tank. Two ARB lockers and axillary air with the inflater hose kit. Runs well. I made a steel bracket the bolts to the inner fender then the compress sits tilted along the fender. A very clean mod. auxillay air is just...

    Arb compressor

Removed original air intake box, went to a high perforfance intake and placed the ARB in the location of the old box. Sits beautifully behind computer on the inner fender. Very clean and accessable. You can hear it come on and charge the tanks, but not loud. Sorry, no pictures, my wife does...

Wheels for 3.5" OME lift on 31x10.50 tires??

I have same lift; ran 31's on stock wheels with no problem. Backspacing is the issue. Most after market wheels do not have 4.25 BS. You can find it if you search. Larger than 31's requires new wheels and fender trimming.
