stupid fuel pump... (or ghetto fuel pump repair)

I keep K-Y (well, actually, Astroglide) in my toolbox for slipping things together, it works rather well. I dunno how much it would help on that fuel tank lock ring. Just yesterday my brother and I changed the fuel pump on his S-10. Pretty sure the parts are similar. The inexpensive...

    RTV tips?

If all you can find is RTV then use the black. RTV is sort of obsolete though, much better stuff is available. If you want a good seal use an anaerobic gasket maker. Loctite makes several varieties. Choose a high flex variety with about .015" gap filling capability. Prepare to pay around 20...

    Need new down pipe

If it is stainless a magnet won't stick. Regardless, the downpipe won't rot out as quickly as the rest of the system because the corrosive moisture in your exaust gas does not linger in it like it does the cooler and more horizontal underbody portion of the ststem. The same factors plus the...

    Daily driver and MGP poll

My bone stock 87 5 speed gets like 12 MPG in town. My commute is one mile one way, and the errands on the way home are usually about 4 miles. I don't feel too bad about that mileage realizing the trips are very short. If I don't have any road trips I fill up once a month. On road trips it is...

Squeaky Doors - How to eliminate

That bar doohicke that holds the door open is probably what's making the noise. Dab some light grease on the slider part of it and it should quiet down some. If you don't keep the hinges oiled they will give you some trouble when the doors start sagging, but they aren't particularly noisy.

    Interesting Oil Leak

The pix of that pug trans looks about like mine. '87 with 220K and that's the only thing that leaks. Really seems to be oozing out all over, typical eurocrap. The square socket in the plugs is just under 3/8" wouldn't you know, and whoever put them in last put them in way too tight. To make...

Replacing a standard instrument cluster for one with tachometer

I was lucky and had the right speedo cable on mine but when you get a cluster you can take the short cable with it just to be sure - but it looks like it would be a pain to get back in behind those dash mounts where it hooks up.

Replacing a standard instrument cluster for one with tachometer

On my '87 I had a regular guage cluster, picked up a tach cluster at a pick & pull for 30 bones. It plugged right in and the tach & guages work fine, except that when I go into 4WD the "Full Time" indicator illuminates on the dash - and I don't have full time. And yeah the voltmeter reads way...

recent tune up now high idle

The TPS doesn't like having anything sprayed in or on it. If you unplug it and it goes down to a more normal idle that's probably your culprit.

    TPS price

I have heard you can use the automatic TPS, I tend to think that's true. At my local pick & pull junkyard you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a junked XJ. When I need parts that's where I go. A '87 isn't worth spending upward of a hundred bucks for a little sensor. When I needed one I...

long linings in rear or front?

It's what is called a "self energizing" brake. The leading shoe in front is shorter. In normal braking the friction of the drum against the leading shoe pulls that shoe in the direction of rotation and that shoe pushes the larger trailing shoe against the drum with more force than could be...

Getting rid of mold & stink

There is a lot of mold & mildew in Oregon. TSP (trisodium phosphate) is a good mold removing cleaner. It may not be legal to buy and use in all areas because high phosphate levels aren't well tolerated by aging sewer systems, but try it if you can get it. Scrub with an upholstery brush and...

    i must be crazy

I suppose it depends on what you are doing. An inside environment is a lot different than a shop but being an arthritis sufferer myself I think I prefer the office. I am the parts department supervisor for a construction equipment dealer and my newest guy starts on an order desk tomorrow after...

    we-pull-it rant

The ones around Eugene are mostly open to wander & pull your own stuff. One usually charges a buck to go in the yard but they always have tons of jeeps and I can walk out with a bag of small parts for ten bucks. Not too bad I don't think.

Hard / No start after stalling (offroad)

Funny, just the other day I had that happen for the first time, I had dashed home (a three minute drive) from work to let one of the girls in, she forgot her key, so for less than a minute I was shut off and it was tough to get restarted. In my case it seemed to be flooded and repeated cranking...

whop noise on a 93 xj

My old friend DiPaulo says ya probably got Italian tires. Dago wopwop all the time, it's normal. But you know those spaghetti benders, sometimes you can't tell when they are just feeding you a line. I don't know, sounds like you might have some excess brake drag wearing out drums in 900...

    proportioning valve

I just put new rear brakes on my '87 today. Even with a D44 the rear brakes are tiny - 10" x 1 3/4, so I don't think you should expect much from them. Mine had been working poorly for some time, grabbing and squealing but not doing much stopping. I was surprised to open it up and find at...

    under seat lockbox idea!

I'm not aware of any state with CCW that requires permit holders to carry unloaded. That just wouldn't make sense. But some states with shall issue still have some rather silly restrictions, like not carrying in bars, churches, and so forth. Those places are private property and their owners...

Anyone ever put a V8 in a XJ?

If I was doing it I would go with a SBC with a EFI kit and a 700R4 would probably be stout enough to tow anything one ought dare put behind an XJ. OTOH if you want a trail rig and aren't too concerned about mileage a TH400 would be nice and simple to deal with - a WOT switch and a shifter. But...
