Dull Grinding? Noise from Front End

Never heard unit bearing before, but it sounds like it may be you hub bearing. Jack it up high enough to get the tire off the ground, grab the tire at 9 & 3 O'clock, try to wiggle it and see if you get any movement.

Info needed about the early XJ 904 trans.

Will a torque converter out of a 4.2 82 Amc Concord w/ 904, fit in a 904 trans in an '85 XJ? Is the Concord one lock-up, is the bolt pattern the same between the two?

    what'll swap into a 84xj with a 2.8 ?

A popular swap for the 2.8 is the 3.4 Camaro V6. Is it just the engine your wanting to swap, or the trans too?

Bosch OEM or Universal Oxygen Sensor?

I've used both in the past, and even the universal one worked just fine. The only draw back, like mentioned above, is you have to cut and splice the wire to use universal one.

    grinding noise

Crawl undernieth and give it a few good twists by hand. Maybe it's just a worn U-joint. Take a few minutes to look things over real good. Feel for slop in the CV part too.

    grinding noise

Can't remember what a new one was. I know it was enough to make me buy a used one though!! I got one off our local jeep forum from someone who was parting out an XJ.

    grinding noise

I had something like that on my old '86. Soon after I added 3" to it, I got a noise under my feet, followed by the eventual lose of drive to the front axle. Ended up being the splines on the front drive shaft. The splines wore down and were slipping, causing the noise.
