    IAC

I will give that a try, how does this affect starting though? sometimes as old and cranky as she is my XJ won't start in the cold (I think the 23 year old fuel pump wants to give up the ghost, I cycle the key at least 2-3 times to make sure the system is pressurized) and do you think that with...

    87 Renix 4.0 intermittant 3000rpm on startup

I am still having problems. How do I adjust the TPS?

    IAC

This sounds very similiar to what I am dealing with my 87. It will calm it self down sometimes. Makes it very hard to drive the vehicle and I am worrying about the transmission (have to put it into neutral durring braking). I have cleaned my IAC which helped my idle a little bit but its still...

    87 Renix 4.0 intermittant 3000rpm on startup

thanks for the help, I cleaned the IAC off (was a bit dirty) and that has seemed to even out my idle (no more wide open 3000rpm starts). Only time will tell but I will keep that Relay in mind. I guess once those are ruled out thats when I will start looking at the TPS.

    87 Renix 4.0 intermittant 3000rpm on startup

My XJ 4.0 is having strange engine issues. Lately, at random times the engine is idling very high. Sometimes on start up she will go to 3000rpm and stay there. Occasionally it will calm itself down after a while and go back to hover around 700rpm (which has always been about normal). I have been...

replacement for discontinued Valvoline High Mileage engine oil

I dunno if this has been talked about on here yet but, I am just about to do my oil change and I had to go all over around town to find enough of the Valvoline High Mileage 10w30 that I have used since I got the XJ (it always had valvoline before that) and in talking to a guy I know who works at...

87 closed system to 92 open system radiator conversion

Well my plastic sided 87 Rad has sprung a leak and if I have to replace the rad I may as well switch over to an open system one and get rid of the leaking pressure bottle. I have a pretty good link (has part #s ect) http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=257864 I was just...

    overheating 87 4.0

what kind of a rad did you use, and did you switch over to an electric fan, those are things that I have been thinking of doing. I may be doing the whole engine this summer, I plan on taking the jeep off the road (as in putting it in the garage) for a few months and doing a whole top and bottom...

    overheating 87 4.0

yeah I am aware that they crack, mine MAY have a crack along the mold line but I have never seen it leak. I am thinking about converting it over to an open cooling system.

    overheating 87 4.0

yeah deffinatly, I am not to sure exactly what is leaking but I have a suspicion that it might be a crack in the side of the plastic of the rad (it still has the factory low-grade plastic sided rad). I may pull her off the road for a little while. Another stupid question but how much more...

What's the stupidest thing you ever did that you would admit to?

I once closed the hood when the hood release cable was removed. What followed was a dissasembley of the front end (headlights and buckets) to get at the nuts that hold down the hood latches thanks to some advice I got on here.

    overheating 87 4.0

well today my 87 4.0 overheated on the way to work. It was idleing for a little while (in line for the drive through, what can I say) and it started to go up to the redzone. I pulled it over and the expansion tank was boiling over. Also I noticed some steam coming from the radiator (87 renix...

    np 231 question

I don't think so as the 91 and up have a different output shaft.

    IAC problem getting worse

I haven't pulled the IAC yet or tried to clean it. Can you do that because I never even thought of that because I figured it would be too easy to get the pintle out of adjustment. Usually on a hot start it works better but its becoming pretty random. I can remember a few times it doing this...

    IAC problem getting worse

OK well my problem with the IAC is getting worse, I have tried cleaning the connection and replacing the latch relay. I think the old latch relay was good though because it was still starting the fuel pump. Unless I manually unplug and reseat the connection for the IAC, the engine will crank and...

    still intermittant starting issue

the wires I am disconnecting are right on the IAC, the plug snaps in to the IAC, if i unplug it with the key on and plug it back it, she will catch, otherwise she just cranks and cranks.

    still intermittant starting issue

well, I switched out my latch relay and I am still getting the same intermittant problem with my 87 4.0. Usually it will run great, but ocassionally, like it did this morning, the engine will just keep turning over and not catch until I pop the hood and unplug/replug the IAC. The IAC was...

some questions about 4wd and u joints

I can assure you its an NP 231 Command Trac part time case. Those prices are not too bad, I think I am going to do the u joints on the rear drive shaft too because of the shimmy when I put it in reverse. I figured just as much with the U joints clanging and banging. As far as the light goes, its...

some questions about 4wd and u joints

first thing is my green 4wd warning light on my 87 with an NP231 just stopped working yesterday, it used to go on but not anymore it seems to me the jeep is still going into 4wd but there is a chance it may not be. I was wondering where the switch was that makes the indicator light up, might...
